Sho-Link Spotlight

January 2013

Ringing in the New Year

It's sinking in. My first New Year's message as the President of Sho-Link. What is to be said to motivate the team, inspire the crews, to connect with the owners? After some contemplation, I have no doubt the place to start is with saying "thank you" for what we have accomplished last year.

If you played any part in Sho-Link last year, as a Member company, Sho-Link Management, Administration staff, City Management, Affiliate Member, Traveling Supervisor, Install and Dismantle crews, all family members and anyone else that contributed to the cause, you deserve to stand up and pat yourself on the back, high five yourself, and feel proud that you were a vital part to one of the most successful years for Sho-Link.

2013 is going to be an exciting year for Sho-Link. This year we CELEBRATE OUR 20TH YEAR AS AN INDUSTRY LEADER. Twenty years does not come about by being lucky or relying on a smoke and mirror attitude. Twenty years of success only comes about because of planning, strong foresight and dedicated management and staff. To continue to be successful will take all of the above. Our objectives are simple: expand on the things we do well, and recognize opportunities for improvement.

Our goals for 2013 are set high; we are expecting to have our largest revenue sales in our history. We are fortunate to have the tools in place that are required to meet such a goal; dedicated people, membership involvement and experience.

We will make the commitment to invest in our Employees and Members. So that there is clear understanding, we will invest in the dedicated people that are willing to be invested in. This investment will encompass many aspects, including technology, equipment, training and new opportunities. As President, it will be my responsibility to not allow opportunities to slip away because of resistance to change. Your responsibility will be to choose if you desire to be invested in and do your part. To our Members our investment to you will come in the form of better equipped managers and crews in technology, management skills and communication.

In closing, I know that by working together, improving efficiencies, sticking to our goals, adjusting when we need to from the plan and by your continued dedication to Sho-Link, we will succeed. We recognize and appreciate the sacrifices you and your families make, the missing trick-or-treating with your children, the birthday parties you miss, the spouses that eat alone because you're attending a show. It is because of your unselfish commitment to Sho-Link that we will end this year soon enough with the opportunity to again high five ourselves.

Happy New Year, stay safe, be prosperous and make sure to take some time to step back and enjoy what you have accomplished.

Thank you,

Scott Rudel, Sho-Link President

Radiological Society of North America (RSNA 2012)

The 98th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meting for RSNA took place this past November at McCormick Place, where it has been held since 1985 every year according to RSNA.org. Sho-Link Chicago set up about 8,900 square feet of exhibit space for multiple clients at this year's show, varying from small booths, to the colossal 50x100 booth for Derse Waukegan's client Konica Minolta Medical Imaging.

Konica Minolta Booth

One of the more interesting facts about the RSNA show is that it has strived to be one of the greenest meetings in the industry, and cleanest, according to RSNA.org. Some of the green features include McCormick's recycling receptacles, reduced heating and utilities, and the use of biodegradable food containers and cutlery to reduce waste. They even go a step further to donate excess food to help feed the less fortunate, and use all of the cooking grease to make Bio-fuel. Sho-Link Chicago did another great job this year, and look forward to next year's RSNA having an equally successful outcome.

Goodbye and Well Wishes

Longtime President Alan Scaccia has ended his 20 year Sho-Link career. Alan left Sho-Link at the end of last year to start what most certainly is expected to be a long and exciting retirement.

Simon Perutz, Chairman of the Board acknowledged Alan by saying "Alan's Scaccia's outstanding leadership over the past 17 years as President has built the Sho-Link organization into the pre-eminent member owned show floor installation and dismantle company. We will all miss Alan and wish him all the best. We know that he has left behind an outstanding team that will continue his great work."

"Al has been a strong leader and people follow strong leadership. Al did what he said he was going to do." said Bill Haney, Chairman of Derse.

Alan started with Sho-Link as Chicago City Manager in 1993. He served in a variety of capacities at Sho-Link, and finished his career as CEO.

Alan began his industry career in 1984 as a carpenter with General Exhibits and Freeman Decorating. In 1987 he became a traveling Supervisor for Freeman Decorating. His successes at Freeman led to his recruitment to Sho-Link.

"Alan is a shining example of what hard work, dedication and loyalty means to a company. More importantly, he is a shining example of what integrity and empathy means to a man," said Derek Gentile, President & CEO, EEI Global.

Alan's retirement was celebrated in December at a local Downtown restaurant, and was attended by owners of Sho-Link, who presented Alan with a Silver Platter in recognition of his service. Also attending were industry leaders, Sho-Link staff and Alan's family.

"I want to thank Alan for all the opportunities he has provided to everyone at every level at Sho-Link. His statesmanship has been inspirational and we will always be grateful for his leadership and the confidence he has shown in the people that worked for him," said Scott Rudel.

Thanks Alan and have a Blast.

The 2012 Sho-Link End of the Year Party

After a busy year, a new office, and saying farewell to Alan Scaccia, the Sho-Link corporate staff, and their signifiicant others enjoyed a well-deserved night of food, fun, and karaoke in the Vernon Hills area in December. We began with a cozy dinner at Pete Miller's Steakhouse, where we got to eat, drink, and relax with one another instead of our daily office routine when we normally see each other.

While enjoying a fine meal, and each other's company, Office Manager Toni Jendras awarded our 2012 Sho-Link Corporate Employee of the Year (To see the lucky recipient and award - please see the Sho-Link Grin Page below!). In addition, Alan Scaccia spoke about his time with the Sho-Link family. This was the last time we would get to see Alan before his retirement at the end of the year, so we made every minute count!

Our night continued at eSkape, where our Sho-Link staff took over the Karoke sign-up sheet. In between laughter, great memories, and scanning karaoke lists for perfect song, the staff enjoyed each other's musical aspirations for the night.

With the end of another fantastic year at Sho-Link, everyone left this year's party feeling warmer, and closer after spending some quality time together. We owe our thanks to our Customer Service Representative, April Panosian, for doing such a  great job planning the party. April found an outstanding restaurant, and group activity we all  enjoyed. We all loved it, and after all -  We Are Family!

2012 Employee of the Year

End of the year, close the books and get ready for the auditors and year end reports. It's time to reflect on the last twelve months and time to choose a name from the Sho-Link family that exemplifies the dedicated Employee of the Year. We are blessed that we are never at a loss for nominations. With Sho-Link Management in the unenviable position to have to choose one individual it often becomes a process of much debate. However, in 2012, the vote was unanimous and without much discussion. Sho-Link congratulates Steve Bierbryer as our 2012 Employee of the Year.

We are proud to acknowledge Steve's contribution as Miami and South Florida's City Manager. Steve's ability to adjust to unexpected adversity of working in a market place that alone can be challenging, to losing his top lead man who passed away last year, Steve has always found a way to overcome adversity. He always avails himself to help in other cities and with minimal resources always comes through with a high performance rating. Steve has been an integral part to the success of Sho-Link since 2002. Scott Rudel shares,"With Steve's positive outlook about work and his personal life you can't help but feel genuine admiration for him. We are fortunate to have Steve as part of Sho-Link."

Congratulations Steve!

Sho-Link Employee Announcements

Karen de la Chapelle, Customer Service Representative

Sho-Link is excited to announce the addition of a new staff member this year, Karen de la Chapelle, Customer Service Representative.

A native of Buffalo, New York, Karen now lives here with her husband Andrew, their two children Lissy and Britton, and their two dogs Romeo and Sugar. When she is not working, or spending time with her family, Karen enjoys mosaic tiling, and running marathons, which she hopes to do again this spring.

Karen brings knowledge from her past work experiences with her, including previous time in the tradeshow industry, arranging services in advance of shows for U.S. Fleet Tracking, which has made her a great fit at Sho-Link. Although Karen has only been here for a short time, she says she is already having fun, and delighted with her fellow co-workers. She is looking forward to her time here, as well as finally meeting the rest of the Sho-Link family around the country who are not at the Corporate Office.
