a glimpse inside the lyons den

Hello Friends,

It's game time! Now I will admit it, I am not athletic.  But I am competitive. It is in that light that I can appreciate the effort and desire to win. After all, lets face it, winning is fun! That being said fair play and good sportsmanship is more honorable and therefore more admirable.  So, why do we love sports?  Because it feeds our competitive spirits, bonds us, energizes us and well....the ribs and wings are good too!

The difference that makes a winner is often miniscule.  Competitors win or lose sometimes by a hundredth of a second.  However, the effort for that margin of victory is large.  Large efforts in sometimes the smallest details can make the difference.

Business is competitive as well.  We work very hard to make those differences evident to our customers.  Yeah, sometimes we have a bad game, but based on our customer service questionnaires' we hit the ball out of the park 97% of the time.  Again, I have to reiterate that the most valuable lessons of sports is about good sportsmanship and honor.  It is in that light that we always seek to provide a honest value to each of our customers.  We don't take short cuts, and always take responsibility for our mistakes.  We welcome feedback, because those are the game tapes that allow us to improve.  We will continue to work hard on the small things for the big win that we don't ever take for granted.  That is you as a "customer for life".

Greg Special, All Sports, All Dad

Greg Special, our General Supervisor from the foam division was and still is all about sports and competition.
His own accomplishments included QB in HS while also competing in basketball, wrestling and track.  All leading to a scholarship to Cornell University.
However Greg would say his shining moment had nothing to do with his own competitive activities. His moment of pride came in watching his daughter winning the championship in fast pitch softball and snagging the MVP award.
Queen of the Service Department

Seri Townsend, our Service Department Administrator fondly speaks of her toddler to teen pageant days.  If anyone else is from the midwest you will appreciate her desire to win the coveted "Pork Queen" title.  She insists the title came with a larger crown and a suede sash.  However the Pork Queen title eluded her leaving her good memories as her time as the reigning Sac County Fair Queen.

See Jeanette Run,

Go Jeanette, Go

We always thought Jeanette Murphy our HR coordinator was hard to pin down but we had no idea just how fast she really is.

Jeanette was the Division Champion in both the 50 and 100 yard sprints all four years in High School.

Jeanette, just moved here from Chicago to work at Lyons Roofing.  Everyday she pinches herself-I haven't yet had to shovel sunshine.  Amen to that Jeanette.

Teamwork

Our Sales Supervisor, Craig Walker spoke fondly of his anchor position on his HS school relay team. He also mentioned being a "tight end" but I still remain unsure if he is talking about football or the net results of being a good runner.

Craig, you are still the anchor on our sales team.  Thanks for all you do!

Rewards

My most enjoyable moments are watching my children compete. I recall being asked if I would purchase a trophy for my son when he played youth soccer. I was surprised at the question.  At that moment my son came to the bench and I asked him, "Would you like me to buy you a trophy or would you like to earn one"? He answered "earn it of course".  Fast forward 13 years, I have a room full of trophies from both my boys, all earned.

So whatever your passion, do it with passion and honor- we all win that way!

Fun

Fun is part of the success of any task or team.  It is amazing what we can accomplish in joy.
