Dear CIM students and supporters,

This Sunday from 4-6pm, we will be hosting a celebration of thanksgiving for all of our wonderful volunteers.  Did you know that over 125 people volunteer for the Center for Irish Music every year?  Of 125 volunteers, 26 plan and execute our two big annual events, igse CIM, A Gaela Event and the Minnesota Irish Music Weekend, giving hundreds of hours (and expertise) to our organization.  The Center for Irish Music truly would not be what it is without the incredible generosity of our volunteers.  Thanks to each and every one of you who has given your time to the Center for Irish Music in the past 11 years.  You have helped us grow into the thriving Irish music school that we are.

We'd love to extend an invitation to new students and families to join our volunteer team this year!  If you are interested, contact us by filling out the online volunteer form or by emailing [email protected].

Thank you, and enjoy the beautiful autumnal weather!  We hope to see you at one of the many events happening this weekend.

Congratulations and Deepest Thanks to Mike & Jan Casey
Mike & Jan Casey, volunteering at CIM's Eigse CIM, A Gaela Event
Congratulations to long-time CIM supporters and volunteers Mike and Jan Casey on receiving the 2015 Curtin-Conway award!  The Curtin-Conway Award is awarded annually by the Irish Fair of Minnesota to someone who has made significant contributions to the Irish cultural community in the Twin Cities and/or Minnesota. The award includes a $1,000 donation by the Irish Fair to the Irish cultural charity of the recipient's choice.

Mike and Jan Casey are active members of the local Irish community. Mike has been involved with Irish Fair since the early days, and under his leadership the Fair's Cultural Area has grown significantly. Mike is a long- time MC for the IMDA Landmark Center events, serves on the board of the Irish Fair, and performs with the Celtic Collaborative Irish theater group.

In addition to being an active volunteer with Irish Fair (including creating the impressive 50-year history of Irish music in the Twin Cities display), Jan has been a dedicated member of the IMDA's board since 2006. Since her involvement began, the entertainment at the Landmark Center events has grown to include a children's stage, Irish theater, expanded Tea Room music and seminars. She regularly updates the IMDA website and Facebook page, and contributes each month to the IMDA newsletter. Jan created and continues to coordinate both the IMDA'S Decade of Dance Award and IMDA's Educational Grant Program.

Thank you to the Caseys for choosing the Center for Irish Music as their charity of choice! Your support means the world to us, and will help us to continue in our mission of "handing down the tradition!"
The Third Volume of the Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection is Available

The Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection is a historic compilation of 1,500 Irish tunes from the repertoire of Paddy O'Brien of County Offaly, an All-Ireland accordion champion and one of the world's outstanding performers of Irish traditional music. In more than five decades as a musician, Paddy has gained a reputation as a walking encyclopedia of Irish music; it's estimated that he carries in his head the melodies of more than 3,000 Irish tunes. Created especially for serious students of Irish music, this unique collection can help today's players learn Irish music the way it was traditionally handed down-by ear.

Paddy has also written a few poems about some of the older musicians and fellow players who have taught him a lot about the music. Here's a video of Paddy reading one of those poems, 'MacMahon from Clare.'

The subjects are characters like Tommy Potts, Willie Clancy, Sonny Brogan, Seamus Ennis, Pid Bn O Brain, Micho Russell, Michael Dwyer, Sean Maguire, Tony MacMahon, Julia Clifford, John Kelly, Jack Dolan, Bill Harte, and a few others as well.

Congratulations to the Twin Cities Robert Emmets Hurling Club Camogie Team!

The Twin Cities Robert Emmets Hurling Club (TCRE) has been a great supporter of the Center for Irish Music over the years,  so it is with great enthusiasm that we offer our congratulations to the TCRE camogie team on their North American GAA title win!  The championship game was held on Sunday, September 6, in the afternoon withering heat.  The TCRE team defeated the Seattle Gaels in a barn-buster second half comeback. The score at the half time whistle was 1-06 to 1-01 in favor of Seattle but Twin Cities took the favorable wind for the second half and came back to win 6-05 to 1-07; the TCRE defense allowing only one point over the bar after the half time; a total score of 23 to 10, in favor of Junior Camogie 2015 National Champions, Twin Cities.

Special congratulations to CIM community members and students Stacey Peterson, Megan Cole, and Sarah MacFarland!
