Traditional
Irish Instruments
|
Artist Marty Ochs and CIM Executive Director Norah Rendell have created this artful coloring book for you! Bring these images to life with your own imagination and artistry, and learn more about 16 of the most commonly-played instruments in traditional Irish music. Great care has been taken to make the details of the illustrations realistic: numbers of keys, buttons, strings, tuning pegs, finger holes and more.
Thank you for supporting the Center for Irish Music with the purchase of this coloring book!
Coloring books are available for purchase in the CIM office or at Irish on Grand for $10.00.

Crater on Mercury Named in Honor of
Irish Harper
Turlough O'Carolan

Carolan Crater, PR image via http://www.iau.org/public/images/detail/iau1506b/
|
The International Astronomical Union (the official naming body for astronomical objects) wanted to name five craters on Mercury in honor of the end of NASA's successful MESSENGER mission to the planet. They solicited nominations and received about 3600 entries. Eligible honorees had to be dead at least 50 years and famous in the area of arts, literature, mythology, etc. (not science or politics). Also, no solar system moon, crater, or other feature could already bear their name. CIM student Deane Morrison, who studies flute with Cory Froelich, was one of three who independently submitted the name of legendary harper and composer Turlough O'Carolan. In late April, a partially sunlit crater near Mercury's north pole was formally dubbed Carolan Crater. Given the strict eligibility criteria, O'Carolan seems like a shoo-in for the honor of first Irish musical figure to lend his name to a solar system feature. So it's probably safe to say that now, Irish music has found a place among the stars.
You can read a news release and see a picture of Carolan Crater here.

Best of luck to CIM students & instructors traveling to the Midwest Regional Fleadh in Cincinnati next weekend, May 15-17! 11 CIM students and their families, 3 instructors (Rosa, Brian & myself), local musicians Michal Sinak and Ryan Bhenke, and little Henry are piling on a bus and taking a musical trip! We wish the competitors all the best.
Spring Recital & potluck celebrations are on on Sunday, May 31st (1pm, 2:30pm & 4:30pm). Students, please coordinate your performances through your instructor(s) and invite all of your friends and family to attend!
Please welcome Administrative Assisant, Chelsea Hall.
We are thrilled to welcome Chelsea to our administrative team just before Erika takes a temporary maternity leave from mid-June to mid-September. Chelsea is a recent graduate of Luther College's Communication Studies program. Upon graduation she took a job working on a U.S. Senate campaign in rural Iowa before relocating to the Twin Cities. Chelsea is a life-long music student and loves to play piano and bassoon.
We are delighted to welcome Greg Padden to the CIM's board of directors. Greg plays guitar, sings, and is a member of Knotted Clover with
his two children, Ella and Connor (both students at the Center for Irish Music). Greg manages wholesale electricity sales and contracts for Great River Energy, holds a MBA degree, and is
a former Naval officer.
Finally, we hope you will join us for National Train Day this Saturday afternoon at the Minnesota Transportation Museum. Both our Young Adult Ensemble and Swallowtail Ensemble will be performing from 1:45pm-2:45pm.

CIM Students to Travel to
the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil
|
The Midwest Fleadh Cheoil (pronounced 'flah kee-ohl') is the regional traditional Irish music competition put on annually by the international Irish music organization called Comhaltas Ceoltir ireann. This year the fleadh will be hosted by the Riley School of Irish Music in Cincinnati, Ohio the weekend of May 15-17th. Our Advanced Youth Ensemble and many other students will be traveling to Cincinnati to compete in solo, duet, trio, grupai cheoil, or ceili band categories. Competition itself is not the only focus of our participation in the fleadh! The camaraderie and process of reaching individual and collective musical goals is what CIM is aiming for as well.
THANK YOU to our donors who have supported this trip through donations to the Travel Fund. We would not be able to make this life-changing, music-affirming trip a priority for our students without your generous support.
