The Twin Cities' own Great Northern Irish Pipers' Club is in the News!
In the March 14 edition of the Star Tribune, some of our local uilleann pipers were given the chance to educate the general public about the pipes.
Check out this great article, featuring a photo of several pipers:

Dear CIM community,
Saint Patrick's Day 2014 was a great success this year for CIM, with multiple public performances by our students -- including a main stage performance by our Advanced Youth Ensemble at the Landmark Center and a live TV spot on Kare 11 with director, Brian Miller. The Landmark Center tea room was packed with music fans, many of whom were impressed with the level of musicianship. Congratulations to our student musicians and thank you for sharing your music!
I'd like to extend a special thank you to the booth volunteers who helped at the IMDA's Day of Irish Dance and St. Patrick's Day Celebrations. Thanks to Emily Flagstad for putting together a beautiful booth and for coordinating the volunteers during such a busy time!
This month, I'd like to draw your attention specifically to the Minnesota Irish Music Weekend, a time when CIM invites legendary traditional musicians from Ireland to the Twin Cities to teach and perform. You don't want to miss MIM this year, so mark June 13-15 on your calendar and register now!
There are three programs in which you can participate:
- Beginner Children's Program - Ages 7 to 11
- Intermediate to Advanced Teen Program
- Adult Program - there are even a few workshops for non-musicians like sean-nós dance with Brían Ó'hAirt or John Blake's Lecture callled "Paddy in the Smoke," Irish Music in London.
Happy Spring! Enjoy perusing the newsletter and see you at the CIM!
--Norah Rendell,
CIM Executive Director

The Dervish Concert
By Ava Sackaroff and Amy Dailey
Our friends drove from Wisconsin to go to Dervish in concert with us. My friend Iris and I jumped up and down with excitement when we saw each other. This would be our first concert together - a flute/tin whistle player and a fiddle player - and we even had matching skirts to wear to the concert!
When we arrived at the concert we were early so Iris and I got to buy some treats. I had a cookie and Iris had chips. Then we ran around and got all of our energy out before sitting in our seats.
When Dervish came on stage I couldn't believe it because the flute

and tin whistle player was right in front of me! And the fiddle player stood right in front of my friend Iris who plays the fiddle!
First Dervish played a slow song. Then they started playing some more fast songs. When they played the reels and the jigs I could barely sit in my seat. They even played one of my favorite songs, called "Welcome Poor Paddy Home."
I was sad when I thought the concert was over but then everyone stood up and clapped for an encore. They played two more songs. Iris and I still had enough energy to skip back to the car. We stayed up until 11:00!!

The IMDA's Educational
Grant
Program
|
The Irish Music & Dance Association offers educational grants to help students of any age to pursue an interest in the traditional arts of Ireland. Grants may be used for classes, fees, travel expenses, equipment purchases or other purpose which supports the applicant's learning. The IMDA's goal is to help students who love Irish music or dance to continue their study, move to the next level of mastery and share their interests with others. They ask grant recipients to bring their new skills back to the community by performing at an IMDA event. They hope that recipients of IMDA Educational Grants will continue their study long into the future and, in so doing, enhance the cultural life of our community. The Irish Music and Dance Association considers the program an investment in the future. Since its start in 2006, the program has made grants to musicians, dancers and students of the Irish (Gaelic) language. The recipients have used their grants for travel expenses, to help with the purchase an instrument, and for classes. The options are as broad as the ideas of the applicants. For more information and to download a grant application, please visit the IMDA's website.
Applications are due by April 15, 2014
