Dear CIM supporters and students,

The Fall term is off to a great start and our hallways are once again bursting with new tunes, songs and budding musical friendships.  Read ahead to see what this month holds for the CIM.

Tomorrow night at the Celtic Junction, Paddy O'Brien's year-long residency at the Center for Irish Music will come to a close with a concert of tunes performed by the CIM apprentice musicians with Paddy and O'Rourke's Feast. Join us as we enjoy the final expression of this wonderful community partnership supported by the Minnesota State Arts Board.

This month, the Celtic Junction will be hosting two special concerts featuring CIM instructors Brian Miller and Dáithí Sproule.  On October 12th, Brian Miller and Randy Gosa will launch his second album of traditional songs from the Northwoods of Minnesota and Wisconsin (many of which are Irish), The Falling of the Pine. Dáithí Sproule will be on tour for the first time ever in the US with his vocal group. Skara Brae, formed in the 1960's. Mark October 27th for a song workshop from 3-4:30pm with the concert kicking off at 7:00pm.

Autumn is a natural season for giving thanks, and on October 13th we will be throwing our annual CIM Volunteer Party to thank all of the volunteers that make CIM such a wonderful school and community.  If you have volunteered for CIM in the past year, come join us for a pint and a tune.

Finally, we are thrilled to announce that we have recently been awarded support from the Minnesota Regional Arts Council to fund the 7th annual Minnesota Irish Music Weekend!  Jeanne Morales and Lisa Richardson will be chairing the event, so mark your calendars now for another incredible weekend of traditional music from June 13-15, 2014.  To kick off our planning for both Éigse and MIM, we will be holding a general Event planning meeting on Sunday, October 20th at 5:00pm.  See below for details and make sure you attend the meeting if you are interested in taking a lead role in planning a CIM event.

Paddy O'Brien Apprenticeship Project Culminates in Community Concert

Join Irish button accordion master Paddy O'Brien and his apprentices from the Center for Irish Music and O'Rourke's Feast for a celebration of Irish traditional music. The apprentices have been working hard for the past year on learning some rare and wonderful tunes from the Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection, an unprecedented documentary recording project to set down and pass along some of the 3,000 tunes that Paddy keeps stored in his phenomenal memory. There is no other collection of Irish traditional music like this in the world!

The ensemble playing at the Cedar Cultural Center with other local world music groups to raise money for Playing for Change and the M2 Foundation.

The ensemble playing at Como Pavillion for the "Step Up for Down Syndrome" walk, an event that raises awareness of Down syndrome in our community.

Fiona McKenna and Caillean Magee played at a drumming festival on whistle and bodhrán.  The wind blowing into the whistle was a challenge, but the audience was very impressed with these two gals' musicianship!
