November 2012
Cozy autumn greetings to you!
It's that time of year when we rake our leaves and reluctantly retrieve the bags of sweaters, long underwear, and boots from our attics and basements.  Fall is a time of hunkering down, of looking forward to winter tune gatherings with friends and of sips of hot toddies by the fire.  In my travels, I have found that towns with cold winters or rainy weather (read: Ireland) have great music scenes! Saint Paul is no exception.  This winter, we are looking forward to spending time with all of you during the following important musical days.  Make a note of these dates on your calendars.

November 15 - Give to the Max Day!
December 9 - Fall Recitals at The Celtic Junction
February 23 - Éigse CIM, A Gaela Event
June 13-16 - Minnesota Irish Music Weekend
(more details about all of these events in the column, below)

This coming weekend is a fabulous way to connect with the Irish community here in the Twin Cities!  The Celtic Junction is once again hosting some stellar traditional Irish musicians. On Saturday night Irish flute player Larry Nugent is performing.  "Laurence will be delving deep into his repertoire for a night of tunes and songs that have established him as one of Ireland's finest exports of traditional Irish flute playing."  The concert is at 8pm.  And on Saturday and Sunday there will be rare opportunities to both attend a workshop with and a concert with traditional singer Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill (Skara Brae, T with the Maggies) and local favorite Daithi Sproule.  At the workshop on Saturday afternoon (3-4:30pm), Daithi will interview Maigread about her musical family and her commitment to unaccompanied song.  On Sunday afternoon (also 3-4:30pm), Daithi will give a workshop on performing Irish traditional music.  And of course, not to be missed is the concert with both Maighread and Daithi on Sunday night at 7pm.  We hope to see you there!  More details and links can be found in the column, at left.

I'd also like to officially welcome Chris Eliasen to the CIM Board of Directors.  Chris is the Manager of Channel Pricing for Andersen Windows in Bayport, MN, and an Adjunct Business Professor for two different Universities. Along with his wife, Shea, Chris is also a dedicated parent of two lovely young promising musicians taking lessons at the CIM (Cates and Mia Eliasen [whistle, song & guitar]), and a long-time resident of Saint Paul.

Thank your for taking the time to read through all of this month's newsletter.  I hope to see you at the Center soon.

GTTM logo 2012

Give to the Max Day is a day for Minnesotans to come together to raise as much money as possible for nonprofits in the 24 hours starting at midnight on Thursday, November 15th and running through midnight on November 16th.

Last year, CIM donors broke our previous records by giving $6,900 in this 24 hours of fundraising. We humbly ask you to help us to match that success on Give to the Max Day 2012.

As you know, the Center for Irish Music is making a difference every day by offering culturally unique programming, sharing the beauty of Irish music through public performances, and enriching our community by bringing in highly respected "bearers of the tradition" to the Twin Cities for concerts and workshops. Your generous support means more and expanded programs.

Join us on November 15, Minnesota's Give to the Max Day, and help us win a $1,000 Golden Ticket. By partnering with GiveMN-an online giving website for Minnesota nonprofits- The Center for Irish Music will have 25 chances to maximize your gift on Give to the Max Day!

By making a donation on Give to the Max Day, your gift could help us win an extra $1,000 for our work in the community.

Together, we hope to raise more than $8,000.00 on Give to the Max Day and we're counting on your help!

You may make a donation via our Razoo page at any time, but remember that your donation will not count towards our Give to the Max Day total unless you donate between midnight on Thursday, November 15th and midnight on November 16th

Session tunes on website
This is a valuable learning tool for ALL of our students.  We encourage you to visit this site often.  The site has both slow and fast recordings of some of the most commonly taught songs at CIM.  Along with the recordings is the sheet music for the tune.  Thanks to Brian Miller and Shawn McBurnie for working hard to get this information available to our students!  To access this page, click here.
