Embroidered Tales: Narrative Imagery in Late Qing (1644-1911) Textiles

Free

 

Figural imagery in Chinese embroidery has long been seen as mere decoration, yet embroiderers were influenced by contemporary prints and performance to express fashionable narratives of the day.

 

Rachel Silberstein, PhD candidate at Oxford University, uses Chinese textiles from the ROM's collection to reveal the narratives behind these scenes, and what they tell us about women's lives in nineteenth-century China. More information

In 2002, while campaigning as a candidate in the Colombian presidential elections, Ingrid Betancourt was abducted by the FARC. She tells the story of her six-and-a-half-year captivity in the Colombian jungle, sharing powerful teachings of resilience, resistance, and faith. More information
