In 2011, the Bernard Carl and Shirley Rosen Library Fund awarded $14,000 to the Edith B. Ford Memorial Library in Ovid, NY to start a "LIbraries For Teens" (LIFT) program which provided needed library engagement to 66 at-risk middle school and high school youth in the South Seneca and Romulus Central School Districts.  Partnering with the schools facilitated recruitment for the program and the grant paid for transportation to the library which was instrumental to the success of the program in this rural community.  A teen advocate was also employed to work with the youth to generate ideas about their own interest areas and to assist in the development of the program.   This resulted in an active book club with regular guests and activities, an exposure to a broad range of new reading materials and a new enthusiasm and excitement about what the library has to offer youth.  An additional grant for $13,000 was awarded in the 2012 Rosen grant cycle to continue to build on this program.

Data Point: Donor Motivations for Initially Establishing Funds at Community Foundations

reasons donors give

As the nation discusses ways to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff," there has been widespread debate over the likely impact of changes to the charitable tax deduction.

Since 2009, CEP has been providing community foundations with insight and analysis based on rigorous surveys of their donors, working with CEOs and foundation leaders to enhance their effectiveness.

As part of our Donor Perception Report, we asked 4,991 donors of 41 US-based community foundations from across the nation the following question:

"Please think back to your first contribution to or through the Foundation, or your initial establishment of a fund at the Foundation. Choose among the following options the two most important reasons you first decided to establish a fund with the Foundation or make a donation to or through the Foundation."

From a list of eight options for giving that ranged from "financial or tax benefits" to "make an impact on a specific issue" to "other," here's what they said.

While this doesn't directly answer questions about the relationship between the charitable tax deduction and future giving patterns, it provides a data-based snapshot of the varied reasons community foundation donors across the country chose to give.

CEP will be publishing new research about community foundation donors in 2013.

2012 Board Chair

Linda brings to the board more than two decades of experience in philanthropy and development. As a philanthropic professional, first with national programs in higher education, as well as aging at Atlantic Philanthropies, and later as Executive Director of the Park Foundation in Ithaca, Linda understands the importance of community support to the success of our non-profits. A native Ithacan with undergraduate and graduate degrees from Cornell University, Linda finds the growth and change in Ithaca and Tompkins County to be very exciting. Watching the development of the Community Foundation from its germination as an idea more than ten years ago, she sees its long-term potential. She believes that, increasingly, Tompkins County is a place where people work together to strive for a better life for all and the Community Foundation has a key role to play in that work now and in the future.
