Jefferson County Fish Dish Review Crew

Fish Fry

Sullivan Saloon

165 Main St.

Sullivan, WI

(262) 593-8912

It was a cold and rainy night on the eastern border of Jefferson County in Sullivan, Wisconsin as we tied up our ponies outside the Sullivan Saloon. As we sidled into the Saloon, we were greeted by a friendly waitress who told us to sit wherever we felt comfortable. And your Fish Dish Review Crew didn't even have to draw the six-guns to get a table! Six lucky cowpokes found the lone empty table at Sullivan's most crowded Friday night destination.

Our first impression was simple: everyone was having a humdinger of a time at The Sullivan Saloon.

Our friendly waitress apologized for the rain, and promised a warm meal along with a cocktail to warm us up. She delivered on both counts.

The Food:

We started with hot and crunchy onion rings and cheese curds for appetizers. We each had something different from the fish menu.

The cod was lightly breaded and hot, with a moist middle. Delicious.

The chicken followed suit, with an appetizing, distinctive seasoning. It was broasted and not fried in the same deep fryer as the fish, as is the case in other places offering the fish/chicken combo.

The Saloon's baked cod was pronounced tasty and included a cup of melted Wisconsin butter for dunking.

One of our group is a bluegill aficionado, and pronounced the plateful exquisite.

The lake perch were large and meaty, with just the right crunch.

Finally, eight shrimp were consumed with a smile.

Sides:

The French fries and broasted potatoes were above average, and the potato pancakes just outstanding. They were crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside with just the right amount of onion and spices. Coleslaw was a nice accompaniment.

Cleanliness & Service:

The Sullivan Saloon's restrooms were spotless and the tables bussed in a timely manner. Service was outstanding.

Your Crew meandered home on home with a full belly and a smile. Yippee ai oh kai yay!

Entrees include your choice of french fries, broasted potatoes or potato pancakes (after 4pm) with coleslaw & bread.

FRIDAY FISH FRY 11am - 9pm

  • Cod
  • Cod & Broasted Chicken
  • Baked Cod (after 4pm)
  • Shrimp (8 pc.)
  • Blue Gills
  • Lake Perch
  • Broasted Chicken

Photojournalist and artist Mark Hirsch is the author of "That Tree".

Hirsch is from Platteville, WI and is an editorial and corporate photographer based out of Dubuque, IA. While recovering from a near fatal car accident in 2012, Hirsch was inspired by a friend to use his iPhone to document a year-long photo-a-day project focusing on an old bur oak tree. Hirsch embraced the challenge, resulting in a transformative experience of healing, self-discovery, inspiration, and enlightenment. The year-long project, along with Hirsch's reflections, has been published as a coffee table book, "That Tree", available at www.thattree.net.

Leo Kottke is a 12-string guitarist known for a fingerpicking style that draws on influences from blues, jazz, and folk music. His fans regard him as one of the most important and influential acoustic steel-string guitarists of the 20th century. In the more than 25 years that he has been composing, arranging and playing, his Americana style has evolved to include classical and jazz-oriented compositional and playing techniques, featured in many acoustic guitar and orchestra concerts. November 17, 2014 - UPROOTED Theatre's "Freedom High"

This world premiere written by Adam Kraar and directed by UW-Whitewater alumna Marti Gobel is a work of fiction, inspired by actual events that occurred during "Freedom Summer" in 1964. The major events of the week of June 21, 1964 are depicted in the play, representing historical fact - including the disappearance of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Mickey Schwerner. The public speeches of Bob Moses in the play are drawn from his actual speeches. The performance honors the actual persons involved in history while also depicting a dramatic spirit of the story. Optional pre-show discussion is taking place at 6:30 p.m. in the Young Auditorium Main Lobby, and the performance also includes a post-show Q&A session.
