Jefferson County Fish Dish Review Crew

Fish Fry

Koshkonong Mounds Country Club

W7670 Koshkonong Mounds Road

Fort Atkinson, WI 53538
920-563-2823

http://www.kmccgolf.com/

If the ancient Indian effigy burial mounds that are visible from the bar could speak, they would tell you that the Koshkonong Mounds Country Club staff has created an inexpensive and solid Friday fish menu that is sure to please.

Your Fish Dish Review Crew braved the dreaded Highway 26 construction with a few of us wandering in looking a tad bit bewildered. Two couples even wound up on the course cart path necessitating a golfer escort to the dining room. That's what I call "playing through!"

It sure started the evening off with a laugh! :)

What a beautiful golf/lake setting. The Mounds' clubhouse sits on a hill overlooking Lake Koshkonong, taking full advantage of its location, with large windows giving a clear view of the lake and the 18th green. A huge bar was whetting the thirst of a group of golfers, and a gathering was taking place in the party room adjacent to the spacious dining room. Black linen tablecloths were a nice touch. We were struck by the friendly waitstaff, who greeted us warmly as we straggled in, making us comfortable while providing libations and taking our appetizer order - Black & Tan Onion Rings (which were very tasty, crunchy on the outside and served with Ranch Dressing) and Crispy Wisconsin Cheese Curds which melted in your mouth.

Appetizers consumed, we indulged in the Mounds' Seafood Chowder, chock full of clams, potatoes, corn, onions and spices in a flour/corn-starch-free broth. Delicious!

Choices for sides included the chowder, potato pancakes, coleslaw, fresh baked bread with honey butter, K.M.C.C. salad (a side salad with choice of dressing) and sautéed Szechwan green beans that were out of this world. Other choices for the evening not on the menu were garlic mashed potatoes and hush puppies. They were out of the potatoes, but we ordered the hush puppies which did not last long. Yum!

The all you can eat fish selections included beer battered cod fish fry - light batter, nice flavor or the Hand Breaded Farm Raised Catfish - which everyone agreed was melt-in-your-mouth tender inside with a great crunch outside. Both run $12.50.

Baked Cod Almandine and "The Shark's" Cod/both $12 (named after golfer Greg Norman) joined the pan seared offerings of teriyaki Sesame Salmon, Blackened Tilapia and Blackened Catfish with Dynamite Sauce ($12-$14.)

Several shrimp and scallop dishes beckoned, but they will have to wait for another visit.

We sampled the fish fry, catfish and Shark's Cod.

All agreed that fantastic service, a great view, reasonable prices and great food made for a most pleasant dining experience. Go ahead. Brave the Highway 26 construction and make your way to an award winning golf course with a great kitchen.

You can check out their menu here: https://www.coursetrends.com/golf/emailer2020/img/kmccgolf/Fish_Fry_2011%282%29.pdf

Cheers! Your Fish Dish Review Crew

2014 Pineapple Award

Hospitality Award logo Have you ever had an exemplary customer service experience in Jefferson County? Has someone gone above and beyond to help you? The Jefferson County Tourism Council (JCTC) bets you have had many such experiences and they want to hear about them.

Reward your great service experience by nominating that person for the 4th annual JCTC Golden Pineapple Award. Nominees should work or volunteer for a Jefferson County business or organization.

"We are looking for a person who makes your day better, who does the unexpected. These front line people are the face of Jefferson County and help to make us a destination. And we don't think they get enough credit, that's why this award was created," said JCTC Board President Leigh Price.

We will be presenting our Golden Pineapple Award to one of the nominated individuals at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, October 15.

The pineapple, especially in Colonial times, was felt to represent a sense of welcome, good cheer, and human warmth. We believe it is the perfect symbol for this award. The top nominees will be honored at a dinner on October 15, 2014, with the winner receiving a cash award. Last year's winner was Michael Cobleigh of Sentry Foods in Fort Atkinson.

NOMINATION DEADLINE: September 15, 2014.

Please check our website for additional information - http://enjoyjeffersoncounty.com/golden-pineapple-award/

Discover Wisconsin Calendar

Every year, Discover Wisconsin produces a calendar featuring some of the best places in our state to visit. Last year, they decided to have viewers and fans feature Wisconsin through the lenses of their own cameras. That's right - all of the photos displayed in the 2014 calendars were submitted by fans!

The 2015 Discover Wisconsin calendar will also feature photos taken by fans. Their staff makes the final decision on who will be featured in the calendar, although they do have public viewing/voting of the photos for prizes. Their goal is to get all 72 counties to participate with photos from all of the counties.

They are accepting submissions through August 13, 2014, on their Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/discoverwisconsin

Good luck - please help us to represent Jefferson County with style!!!
