The Young Auditorium in Whitewater
The Young Auditorium in Whitewater has two wonderful and classic plays to present to audiences in October.
Aquila Theatre Performs Cyrano de Bergerac - October 23
Cultural Affairs and Contemporary Issues present one of the most famous stories in romantic literature. On October 23, 2012 at 7:30pm the beautifully funny, poignant and heart wrenching production of Cyrano de Bergerac by the Aquila Theatre will be performed in UW-Whitewater's Young Auditorium. Sounds bites will also be held at 6:30pm in the main lobby. Tickets are priced at $29/ $25/$19 for general public and $14.25 for all UW-Whitewater students. Purchase tickets by calling 262-472-2222 or online at www.uww.edu/youngauditorium.
Cyrano is the story of an excellent swordsman from Gascony, which is a region of France famous for producing stubborn, courageous and grandiose soldiers. He is besotted with the beautiful and alluring Roxanne, and yet, because of his famously huge nose, the forlorn Cyrano feels that he can never truly win her heart; therefore, keeps his love as a personal and painful secret. Feeling as though he can't be with the one he loves Cyrano's passionate adventure unfolds, in a compelling journey through the romantic streets of Paris, the dramatic battlefield of Arras, and the placid cloisters of the convent where this exquisite tale reaches its heart wrenching and emotional conclusion.
Cyrano de Bergerac was first staged to great acclaim at the Theater de la Porte St. Martin in 1897. This superb play immediately thrust the dramatist Edmond Rostand to prominence and led Cyrano to become one of the most famous French plays of the late 19th century. The story, based on a true historical figure, attracts audiences today more than ever on both stage and in film. Notable film productions of this tale include Jose Ferrer's Oscar-winning performance in 1950, Gerard Depardieu's in 1990, and Steve Martin's modern American version, Roxanne, in 1987.
The Aquila Theatre brings its considerable skill and experience in producing innovative and exciting renditions to this classic, European play. With Aquila's trademark attention to movement and the visual arts, Cyrano de Bergerac promises to be a wonderful evening of live theatre of the highest caliber. For more information on Cyrano de Bergerac or on Aquila Theatre productions, visit www.baylinartists.com/artist/aquila_theatre
The Taming of the Shrew - October 24
Shakespeare is best known for creating some of the most famous plays in history. Aquila Theatre brings a modern spin to the classic, The Taming of the Shrew, presented by Cultural Affairs and sponsored by Rocky Rococo, on October 24, 2012 at 7:30 PM at UW-Whitewater's Young Auditorium. Sound bites will be held at 6:30 PM in the main lobby, this is a free lecture/discussion lead by a member of the touring company with desserts and beverages available for purchase. Tickets are priced at $29/$25/ $19 for the general public and $14.25 for all UW-Whitewater students.
The battle of the sexes heats up in Shakespeare's The Taming of The Shrew when Petruchio sets out to marry and tame Katherina. Bianca Minola, the beautiful daughter of a lord, is eligible for marriage but cannot be courted until her elder sister, Katherina, finds a husband. Katherina's quick temper and acerbic wit, however, frighten off every potential suitor. Feeling that they are running out of options, two suitors hire a newcomer named Petruchio to seduce and "tame" Katherina. After their exchanges of wisecracks and double entendres, Petruchio succeeds in dragging Katharina to the altar then away to his country home. Once there, the taming process begins, with both sides unwilling to yield.
From its earliest productions at the Globe to Michael Bogdanov's 1978 production at the RSC to Gil Junger's modern retelling, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Taming of the Shrew has adapted with each generation. The story, with its domestic power plays and controversial depiction of marriage, has been the subject of multiple operas and the backdrop for Cole Porter's Tony Award winning musical Kiss Me Kate.
The Aquila Theater brings one of Shakespeare's most challenging comedies to life, and The New Yorker describes their productions as "The classics made relevant with superb acting and clever staging" and The New York Times states that The Taming of the Shrew by Aquila Theatre is, "...eclectically entertaining." For more information on The Taming of the Shrew or on Aquila Theatre, visit http://www.baylinartists.com/artist/aquila_theatre/tours/261/.

2013 Jefferson County Hospitality Awards
Have you ever had an exemplary customer service experience in Jefferson County? Has someone gone above and beyond to help you? The Jefferson County Tourism Council (JCTC) bets you have had many such experiences and they want to hear about them.
Reward your great service experience by nominating that person for the 3rd annual JCTC Golden Pineapple Award. Nominees should work or volunteer for a Jefferson County business or organization. "We are looking for a person who makes your day better, who does the unexpected. These front line people are the face of Jefferson County and help to make us a destination. And we don't think they get enough credit, that's why this award was created," said JCTC Board President Steve Cline. We will be presenting our Golden Pineapple Award to one of the nominated individuals at an awards ceremony in March of 2013 at a local restaurant (to be announced). The pineapple, especially in Colonial times, was felt to represent a sense of welcome, good cheer, and human warmth. We believe it is the perfect symbol for this award. The top nominees will be honored at a dinner with the winner receiving a cash award. Last year's winner was Teri Macejkovic at the BeeHive Hair Salon in Jefferson. DEADLINE TO NOMINATE SOMEONE IS FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2013. Click here for more information and to nominate someone. |

October 2-3 - Palmetto State Quartet in Christian Concert
Palmetto State Quartet has been a mainstay in Southern Gospel Music since the 1940s. With nearly 70 years of history behind them, PSQ is regarded as one of the premier Christian recording artists in the industry. Over the years, many wonderfully talented men have represented PSQ, always delivering the finest vocal harmony and superb stage presence. That tradition continues today under the leadership of owner Larry Strickland. After years of managing the career of his wife, Naomi Judd, Larry decided to return to Gospel Music as Bass singer for PSQ. Together with Lead singer Paul Lancaster, Tenor Robert Fulton and Baritone David Darst Palmetto State Quartet sets a high standard for vocal quality. With sixteen years in the pulpit Darst also serves as the group's pastor and gives PSQ the ability to seamlessly transition from Christian entertainment to ministry. Their concerts are a true blessing to everyone who hears them. Tuesday and Wednesday matinee arrival 10:30am, Tuesday evening arrival 5:00pm.
