My son is at his "happy place" right now - Camp Seneca Lake. It's a sleep away camp in upstate New York where my husband Andrew went for many years. Aboth a camper and a counselor, it's the place where he learned to sail, make campfires, and most importantly, made a group of lifelong

friends that are still his closest friends to this day.

Now Adam is there enjoying camp, along with my husband's friends' kids, and it's all come full circle.

As many families do, CSL had reels and reels of old "home movies" and wanted to do something meaningful with them. They knew their strong alumni contingent would be excited to see them and thought it might be a good way to fundraise.

With our help, we culled down 60 hours of footage into an entertaining half-hour video that has been shown at alumni receptions and has brought back wonderful memories. (Learn how we did it here.)

You or your relatives likely have many reels of old home movies too. And maybe they're even transferred to DVD or to a computer file. But are they watchable?

A great thing that you can do yourself or hire someone to do is take all of those home movies and put them together into a meaningful way that future generations will want to watch.

You can organize your movies by year, by theme or by topic. Don't feel you need to include every shot. In fact, please don't. Think about including the most entertaining and useable footage you have and cutting it down to a manageable viewing length. (20-30 minutes is a good rule of thumb).

Focus on any clips with good audio and try to include them where you can. (In the CSL film, my favorite parts are the ones where you can hear the campers putting on a skit or singing a song.) Good audio can often be even more engaging than good video.

Whether you do a simple project, like creating a chaptered DVD of your home movie clips, or a more elaborate edited film, the process will create something that will be a priceless gift for generations to come.

Need help getting started? Give us a call. We love looking through old home movies.

Hope you're enjoying summer and making your own camp-like memories!

Warmly,

  Debbie
