ASCCA Board of Directors Nominating Report
The ASCCA Nominating Committee solicited candidates for a two (2) year term on the ASCCA Board of Directors, commencing January 1, 2016. After review of each candidates qualifications, the Nominating Committee presents the following slate.

ASCCA previously reported as part of our Bureau of Automotive Repair Advisory Group (BAG) meeting summary that there has been a big increase in citations and fines for issuing a certificate of compliance using a BAR97 EIS when an OIS test was required. This is a violation of Section 44050 of the Health and Safety Code. According to statistics provided by the BAR during the July 23rd, BAG meeting they had already issued 437 citations.

Governor, Legislative Leaders Signal Defeat on Key SB 350 Provision
 On September 9, Governor Jerry Brown, Senate Leader de Le�n, and Assembly Speaker Atkins held a joint press conference to announce they were repealing Senate Bill 350's key, yet controversial provision requiring vehicle petroleum use be cut in half by 2030.
It's a huge defeat for Governor Brown and legislative leaders, who failed to mount stiff opposition posed by organizations such as ASCCA, business groups, oil companies, Republicans, and even some Democrat lawmakers.
Though the worst element is gone, the other two provisions to increase renewable energy use by 50 percent and double energy efficiency in existing buildings remain intact. ASCCA maintains that if passed, Senate Bill 350 would still give broad authority to the California Air Resources Board (CARB), allowing them to unilaterally adopt new regulations without taking into account the impact on jobs and the economy. Furthermore, the requirements to increase the current renewable energy portfolio and energy efficiency in existing buildings would result in skyrocketing energy costs for individual ratepayers and small businesses.
Although the bill was not completely defeated, this was no small victory. Because of ASCCA's hard work and all of the members who contacted their legislators, Governor Brown himself conceded that the bill has essentially been "gutted." It couldn't have been done without you!

Countertop Display Contest Update - FINAL DAY

NorCal has taken the lead a bit higher to 175-142 over SoCal. One of NorCal's entries was from Diablo Marine & Trailer in Antioch. They included the lovely photo of their dog representing the ASCCA (don't worry, their actual entry was on the countertop).

ASCCA Chapter 14 meets on the third Tuesday of each month. The next meeting is scheduled for 9/15/15.

Chapter 12 West Los Angles held their monthly dinner meeting, featuring a special presentation to longtime ASCCA members, Alan and Dee Cherko. The dual ASCCA Hall of Fame award, which was presented by ASCCA President Steve Vanlandingham, was well received by Alan, as his wife preceded him in death.
Alan started off as an IGO member sometime around 1956. In addition to his service to Chapter 12 in several capacities, he served two terms as ASCCA President in 1995 and 2000. Dee was equally involved and served as President of the former ASCettes women's club. Together, the Cherkos were instrumental in developing the ASC Educational Foundation, and today there is a scholarship fund in their honor. The teamwork of this "dynamic duo" has left a lasting impact on ASCCA, and their accomplishments and contributions were rightfully honored.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for OEM policy-makers and independent service professionals to share insights into each other's world. Agenda items include vehicle cybersecurity designs that won't impede the repair process and the problems and benefits of getting the industry to adopt the soon to be published new version of the SAE J2534 standard. Each of NASTF's six committees also will make significant announcements about their 2015 projects during the meeting. Advance registration is not required for AAPEX attendees, however, seating is very limited for the free NASTF meeting. "Join the conversation," says Skip Potter, executive director of NASTF. "NASTF is where OEMs and techs connect and we need everyone's ideas to ensure access by independent technicians to OEM service information."

Engage Your Customers on the Issue of Telematics
The ASCCA Public Relations committee is encouraging all ASCCA members to begin engaging their customers in a consumer education campaign on Telematics. A flyer has been developed by the Committee for you to use in your shops. Consider displaying these flyers and even attaching them to your customer invoices. The intent is to engage your customer in a dialogue with you so you can inform them of what Telematics is and the potential risk it presents to their right for privacy. You can take this opportunity to inform your customer that through your association you are advocating on their behalf in an attempt to protect consumer privacy.
