Will it Soon Be Illegal to Repair Your Own Car?

Car enthusiasts and mechanics may be violating the law when they work on their own cars, says a non-profit watchdog group, the Electronic Frontier Association. Since cars nowadays rely on computers extensively, modifying their computers in the course of repairs without a manufacturer's approval could be interpreted as a copyright violation. Help Your Customers with Winter Travel
One-third of the public will be traveling by car somewhere for their winter holidays, and most of them will be traveling in their own cars. The reason for this is the very low gas prices in 2014, compared to the previous five years. You can help your customers by making sure they have a vehicle inspection if they are planning a long trip, and by seeing to oil changes, fluid and tire checks.


NASTF Founding Member John Cabaniss Retires

John Cabaniss has announced he will step down from the Board of Directors of the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) on January 2, 2015. He will continue his voluntary service to the organization he helped create 14 years ago, however. "John has extensive knowledge about NASTF that we can't afford to lose," says ASCCA ex-officio board member Allen Pennebaker, Chair of the NASTF Board of Directors and owner of Orinda Motors in Orinda, California.

Announcing the Top 10 Best-Selling Cars in November
Pickup trucks and SUVs have become more popular lately, as gas prices have declined. Cars.com has announced the top 10 best-selling cars in the last month, and it seems small SUVs are hot. Meanwhile, hybrid and EV sales plummeted as consumers became less concerned about the cost of gas.

ASCCA Member of the Month - December 2014

The ASCCA's member of the month for December is John Eppstein, owner of John's Automotive Care in San Diego. He has been in the automotive industry since 1985. John is active in the community through the Boys and Girls Club. He is a board member of ASCCA and also serves on the ASCCA Endorsements Committee. John is a member of ASCCA Chapter 24 and has served as its secretary, vice president, and chair of the Meetings Committee. He is also on the ASCEF Board of Trustees and his shop is an ASCEF Cars for Careers donation site.

Creative, Grassroots Marketing Helps Get Business in Slow Times
The owner of Leadfoot Linda's in Avon, Colorado, an independent auto shop, engages in non-traditional marketing to get customers coming in the door three to four times a year, even in slow times. He pounds the pavement and gives out doughnuts and calendars, shakes hands, and thanks other businesses for their referrals. It works. Other businesses and his clients feel his shop is part of the community and support him, even though his shop is more expensive than others.


Cadillac's New President Shares His Thoughts on Getting Cadillac Back on Top
Cadillac's new president, Johan de Nysschen, who took over Cadillac on August 1 after being at Audi, shared his thoughts on Facebook and was written up in Automobile Magazine. He has issued five new directives, aiming to get Cadillac back on top as a luxury car brand and make Cadillac cars more automated.
