ASCCA Elects 2015 Board of Directors and Officers
At this weekend's leadership meetings the ASCCA Chapter Representatives Committee (CRC) confirmed your association's 2015 board directors and the 2015  Board of Directors elected its officers. The 2015 officers will be:  Craig Johnson, President; Steve Vanlandingham, Vice President; David Kusa, Treasurer; Steve Elstins, Secretary; and Rocky Khamenian Chapter Representatives Committee Chair.
NorCal Stuns SoCal with 114-85 Win in Countertop Display Contest; SoCal Serves Ice Cream Sundaes to the North
The result of the ASCCA'S countertop display contest was officially revealed at the Chapter Representatives meeting during the Team Weekend in Sacramento - and the North won with 114 shops participating, compared to 85 for SoCal. This was a shocking upset as SoCal had been leading nearly every day of the three-month contest. However, in the final week more than 100 contest entries were sent in, and most of them were from NorCal shops.

Jerry Brown Approves Community College Bachelor's Degrees

In what could portend a monumental shift in public higher education in California, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill Sunday that will allow up to 15 community colleges to launch bachelor's degrees programs in vocational fields.

 

While 21 other states offer community college baccalaureates, California's colleges have traditionally been the domain of transfer students and career technical education, granting two-year associate degrees, as established more than fifty years ago in the Master Plan for Higher Education. Senate Bill 850 will allow colleges to experiment with four-year degrees. The pilot program is set to begin no later than the 2017-18 academic year and end in 2024.

Mercedes-Benz Creates Anti-Hacking Car Data Firewall
(from the Auto Care Association Capital Report) - On Sept. 18, Mercedes-Benz announced the creation of a cloud-based vehicle solution to protect the privacy of car owners' data. The system was tested by specialists over a three-month period and each failed to hack into the cloud system and reach beyond the firewall. 


iATN Launches New Search Engine
The International Automotive Technicians Network (iATN), an ASCCA-endorsed vendor, announced on Monday that it has added a new search platform to its website that allow premium users to search a backlog of information and discussions dating back to iATN's launch in 1995. Users can save time by quickly defining a vehicle. New features include "Search Related Vehicles," "Smart Vehicle Builder," and "Related DTCS."

ASCCA Member of the Month - September
The ASCCA's member of the month for September is Raul Salgado of Raul's Auto Repair in Azusa and Covina; he is a member of ASCCA Chapter 5 (Foothill)Raul was inspired to become involved in automotive repair by ASCCA members, particularly Gene Morrill and Craig Johnson. He was able to own and run his very successful repair shop through hard work, training, and by having the right people working for him. From being an ASCCA member, he has gained a network of friends and created the best shop. He advises new ASCCA members to get to know their fellow ASCCA members and get involved with their local chapter. If you are not a member, Raul says to become a member as soon as possible!

The top three auto part categories for online parts sales are braking systems, ignition and engine, and glass, mirrors and lamps, according to the AutoCare Association. This "e-tailing" is the fastest growing retail sector in the automotive aftermarket.
