Gov. Jerry Brown Signs Bill Guaranteeing Workers Three Paid Sick Days a Year
On Sept. 10 Governor Jerry Brown signed AB 1522 into law. AB 1522, the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014, provides most California workers three paid sick days a year. The new law will go into effect July 1, 2015.

ASCCA was opposed to this bill because it requires a costly mandate to all employers, which can be difficult for small businesses trying to survive in difficult economic times. ASCCA President Mary Kemnitz wrote a letter to Gov. Brown expressing ASCCA's opposition to AB 1522, and ASCCA members were encouraged to contact the Governor (and before that, their senators and legislators) to try and stop the bill. ASCCA thanks all of our members who took the time to write or call the governor and/or their representatives.

Brown's support of the bill was expected. The bill requires employers to provide paid sick leave to employees who work 30 or more days within a year from commencement of employment, and employees will earn a minimum of one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. California joins Connecticut as the only two states that require paid sick leave.
