SB 994 Amended
As previously reported, ASCCA is in support of SB 994 (Monning). The bill was amended yesterday and re-referred to the Senate Committee on Transportation and Housing. Click here to read the amended bill language.

Talking Points
- Currently consumers have little or no access to their car computer information.
- Car computers can generate and collect sensitive personal information about consumers, including driving habits, vehicle condition, repair, maintenance and diagnostic data;
- It's important that consumers know what information is stored in their car and have access;
- SB 994 requires car manufacturers to disclose to consumers the type of data generated/collected by their car and provides that the information collected/stored in the vehicle belongs to the consumer;
- SB 994 prohibits the car manufacturer from restricting access and gives the consumer the right to share the data with an auto mechanic or third party of his or her choice.

The Built-In Time Saver
Motorists require to be educated about the choices they have when deciding what repair or preventive maintenance job to authorize. Service Advisors, although dedicated to provide the best education, are often time constrained when seeking the job authorization, at the counter or on the phone. Too often shortcuts are taken, in order to simply keep up with the high pace in a busy shop. Ultimately less work gets authorized. What if the technician just needs to select the condition and action for a particular topic and the educational information including a video is automatically added to the inspection result?
