ASCCA Members Take Action: Contact your legislators and ask for their support of SB 994. The bill will be heard in Senate Transportation on April 8. It is important that if your California State Senator is on the Transportation Committee that you write a letter requesting that he/she support the bill. If your senator is not on the committee, we could still use your help to write your Senator for support.

Below are talking points and the Senate Transportation Committee Members.

Talking Points

    • Currently consumers have little or no access to their car computer information.
    • Car computers can generate and collect sensitive personal information about consumers, including driving habits, vehicle condition, repair, maintenance and diagnostic data;
    • It's important that consumers know what information is stored in their car and have access;
    • SB 994 requires car manufacturers to disclose to consumers the type of data generated/collected by their car and provides that the information collected/stored in the vehicle belongs to the consumer;
    • SB 994 prohibits the car manufacturer from restricting access and gives the consumer the right to share the data with an auto mechanic or third party of his or her choice.

Compliance with Copper Content in Brake Pads Website - Take a Look

from CAWA Connections

The CAWA announced yesterday the launch of a website that educates our industry on brake pad compliance issues given the reduced copper content law passed a couple of years ago. To review the website, go to www.copperfreebrakes.org.

Automotive Product Toxic Chemicals in Sights of the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC)

from CAWA Connections

The DTSC has taken the first steps toward practical implementation of the Safer Consumer Products Alternatives, or Green Chemistry, law in California.  In full implementation, product manufacturers whose products contain "priority" chemicals posing various health or environmental risks as determined by DTSC, will be required to go through an "alternatives analysis" to reduce or eliminate the prevalence of the chemicals in the products, or face a range of government actions, from mandated labels to outright bans on product sales in California.  CAWA is following DTSC's progress in identifying harmful chemicals, some of which will be automotive-related. ASCCA will also begin monitoring the DTSC's actions on this matter, to gauge if there is any impact to its members.
