NASTF Brings OEM Execs to General Meeting During VISION January 14, 2013
|
St. Johns, FL - Toyota, Subaru and General Motors executives are the early confirmations for OEM participation in the March 8 General Meeting for the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF). The meeting is a guest event to be held during the popular VISION Hi-Tech Training and Expo in Overland Park, Kansas. Several other OEM service operation support divisions have indicated their possible attendance and the NASTF meeting agenda will include new participants as they are confirmed.
"NASTF plays a unique role in the automotive industry as the contact point between independent technicians and service operation support executives inside each of the original equipment automobile manufacturers (OEMs)", says Skip Potter, Executive Director of NASTF. "Our General Meetings provide the opportunity for shop owners, their technicians and service writers to engage, face-to-face, in productive conversations with OEM service support representatives concerning OEM service resources."
Mark Saxonberg, Service Technology Manager for Toyota; Kelly Geist, Service Engineering Manager for Subaru; and Bob Stewart, Aftermarket Service Support for GM will participate in presentations and panel discussions that will make up the NASTF General Meeting Agenda. The complete agenda will be released soon.
NASTF holds two General Meetings each year. The site for the Spring 2013 NASTF General Meeting was chosen specifically in recognition that the VISION educational conference is the single largest gathering of professional independent technicians in the USA. The NASTF General Meeting is scheduled for 1 - 4:30 pm on Friday, March 8 in the Overland Park Convention Center near Kansas City. There is no charge to attend the NASTF meeting but there is a fee to register for other educational sessions at the VISION conference. Information and registration for VISION is available at www.visionkc.com. The Fall 2013 General Meeting will be held in Las Vegas during the week of the AAPEX and SEMA trade shows. The details for the Fall meeting have not yet been released.

January Member of the Month John Camara
| John Camara, Camara Auto Service, Inc., Tulare, CA
In his own words:
"I became inspired to get involved in automotive repair from always being curious as to how toys and other objects worked. When my personal objects would eventually break I would naturally try to fix them. When I entered high school I enrolled in auto shop classes and eventually an opportunity came along for me to work part time at a full service station assisting in the repairs. That began my automotive repair career.
In 1972 the owner of the facility I grew to manage unfortunately experienced serious medical complications and he could no longer work full time and looked for a buyer to take over his business. At that time I decided this would be my opportunity to own my own repair shop. I then was able to start my own business on January 01, 1973.
From the very first ASCCA meeting I attended in my chapter we sat at a round table with five shop owners and tried to help one of the shop owners solve a problem with a car they were working on. At that point I knew I wanted to belong. Afterwards, staying in ASCCA was easy, there is a quote I believe is from Henry Ford and says "If you want to be successful surround yourself with successful people." That is what I have done in ASCCA.
To my fellow shop owners who are new in ASCCA the first thing that I would recommend is to ATTEND a meeting, PARTICIPATE in a chapter or the state meetings and don't be afraid to speak up and ask questions; everyone there is your friend."
ASCCA members like John are shining examples of how One Member CAN Make a Difference!

Sandy Forces Automakers to Scrap Over 15,000 Vehicles
|
r shops licensed by the Bureau of Automotive Repair.
In the wake of Superstorm Sandy's destruction, automakers were forced to scrap more than 15,000 new vehicles damaged by the storm. Nissan estimated more than 6,000 Nissan and luxury Infiniti brand cars and light trucks would be unable to be sold because of storm damage. Including used autos and those of individual owners, approximately 200,000 will have to be replaced, according to Larry Dixon, senior analyst for the National Automobile Dealers Association.
Some 4,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles were at the company's port facility in Newark, NJ, when the storm hit. A Toyota spokesperson noted that about 1,300 may be salvaged, and 3,000 likely will be scrapped. Another 825 vehicles in dealer inventory were damaged by Sandy and can't be sold.
Honda and Acura dealers expect to have to scrap about 3,400 vehicles, with scrappage decisions determined by dealers and their insurers. Additionally, about 500 U.S.-built vehicles Honda was preparing to export from the port facility in Newark were also damaged.
Chrysler dealers lost about 750 vehicles from their stock, while the Hyundai Motor Co. U.S. unit lost 400 vehicles, and Kia Motor Corp. had about 200 vehicles damaged beyond repair.
