Hearty congratulations to the Kau Scenic Byway for installing their first informational signs. Their blessing ceremony was a wonderful community gathering and well deserved!

We also want to thank all four of our aspiring Byway committees for submitting their designation applications. We're currently reviewing all and look forward to news on that soon.

Kau Scenic Byway's First Project Completed!

The next time you're driving through Kau, you'll be able to

make a stop at mile marker 75 to gain a greater awareness of the vista spreading makai towards the Ocean. The local byway committee stewarding the Kau Scenic Byway, the Slopes of Mauna Loa, is pleased to announce the installation of signage (below) at this scenic lookout along the Mamalahoa Highway. One of the informational signs emphasizes geology and local history, while the other has a focus on types of lava and its impact on plant growth.

Blossom DeSilva, President of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Kau, led a lovely Blessing Ceremony on October 23rd for the unveiling of the signs. The local byway committee would like to acknowledge the contributions of the Hawaii Tourism Authority for its grant, as well as the technical assistance provided by Richard Morrow, the National Park Service's Rita Pregana and HDOT's District Engineer Sal Panem.
