Greetings!

We hope everyone had a relaxing and safe Fourth of July celebration. Of course there's more fun to be had this month, with myriad happenings along our Scenic Byways, including the unmissable Koloa Plantation Days festival on Kauai.

We also want to congratulate Anthony Foxx for being named new Secretary of Transportation, a position sure to influence the future of the Scenic Byways program. Best of luck to Secretary Foxx!

US DOT Sec. Anthony Foxx
Anthony Foxx became the 17th United States Secretary of Transportation on July 2nd. Sec. Foxx previously served as the mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, from 2009 to 2013. During his time as mayor, he oversaw and implemented several major transportation projects including extending the LYNX light rail system, the largest capital project ever undertaken by the city, which will build new roads, bridges, transit as well as bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

An attorney by trade, Secretary Foxx succeeds former secretary Ray LaHood who has resigned to enter the private sector.

Koloa Plantation Days

Every July, the people of Poipu and Koloa, along our Holo Holo Koloa Scenic Byway, celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of these two small towns with the Koloa Plantation Days celebration. The many ethnic groups that came to Hawaii to work on sugar plantations, and the Hawaiians who welcomed them, are celebrated through music, dance, costumes and food throughout this eight-day festival. Held in the area where Hawaii's first sugar plantation was founded in 1835, Koloa Plantation Days comprises a lively, family-oriented slate of events that showcase the area's social history, its natural history and its diverse cultural traditions. Most events are outdoors and free of charge. This marks the 29th year of the celebration and it will run from July 21-29.
