JUNIOR SELECTED FOR COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY'S SCIENCE HONORS PROGRAM
Congrats to Mokhtar R. '18, who was chosen for
Columbia University's Science Honors Program. The highly selective program received 2,000 applications for only 400 spots this year. Students in this high school program take courses like DNA Dynamics, Sustainable Engineering, Modern Cosmology, Geometry and Topology and Computer Programming in Java. Classes are held on Saturdays throughout the academic year.
BREAKFAST CLUB ANALYZES THE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE
World Affairs Breakfast Club discussed the first presidential debate of the 2016 election - Hillary Clinton vs. Donald Trump - with special guest Jim Shapiro, middle school director and BC speech and debate coach. The group spoke about each candidate's performance and the differences between this debate and the debates of elections past. Read more on the

1ST GRADE READS TRAVEL BOOK (IN SPANISH)
First graders read "Asi vamos a la escuela," a book which shows the different ways children travel to school around the world. They then created a graph illustrating how they come to school and played a matching game using Spanish transportation vocabulary.

9TH GRADE INVESTIGATES FOOD FOR ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
Ninth graders conducted a lab during which they identified the presence or absence of certain organic compounds in food. They tested different foods using specific chemical indicators.
SENIOR SPEAKERS
This week's senior speaker was Avery S.! He spoke about why he is the person that he is and advised his fellow students to not only accept others for who they are, but to accept themselves as well.
ATHLETICS
Boys 7/8 Soccer beat Packer 5-1 last Friday and earned a 4-3 victory over Friends Seminary yesterday. In the latter game, the boys pulled off a three-goal comeback after being down 2-0 at the end of the first half - and the winning goal was scored right at the whistle! And check out the

4th GRADERS STUDY THE WORLD'S OLDEST SPECIES
Fourth graders observed the world's oldest species (the horseshoe crab), handled oyster drills and blue crabs and learned about the big filter power of a small oyster at The River Project. The trip was part of the students' investigation of New York City's water. This working wet lab situated on Pier 40 at the mouth of the Hudson River provides an introduction to the geography of the river, as well as the amazing biodiversity that lives there.

8TH GRADE USES SHADOWS TO DETERMINE HEIGHTS OF OBJECTS
Eighth grade algebra students determined the heights of objects, such as lampposts, flagpoles and the Soldiers' and Sailors' Arch, at Grand Army Plaza yesterday by measuring their shadows. The lesson's objective was to use proportions (a statement that two ratios are equivalent) found from corresponding sides of similar figures to measure objects indirectly.
