NY MAGAZINE CALLS BC "THE HARVARD OF BROOKLYN'S K-12 INSTITUTIONS"
New York Magazine calls Berkeley Carroll "the Harvard of Brooklyn's K-12 institutions" and gives a shout-out to our Middle School Math Specialist Susanna Brock, who gave a TED Talk at her recent Harvard reunion about the study she's been doing at BC on whether single-sex math classes at the middle school level can improve the performance of female students. MIDDLE SCHOOL CLOSING CEREMONY HIGHLIGHTS
Congratulations to our eighth graders, who moved up to the Upper School yesterday, and to the rest of our middle schoolers!  Luca I. '23, Olle S. '22, Nola M. '21 and Arielle S. '20 spoke on behalf of their grades. The Middle School Chorus, Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble all performed. "It's our job to use our education to make other's lives better - not just our own," Arielle said. "Whether it's big or small we are empowered forever as change agents." 4TH GRADE ARTS SHOWCASE PLAYS TO PACKED HOUSE
Fourth graders performed for family, friends and fellow students at their end-of-year Arts Showcase. They danced, sang, played music, acted, displayed their art skills, and showed how to collaborate and make real world decisions- like how to decide on the best cell phone plan. Photos.
 
PROJECT BROOKLYN: MIDDLE SCHOOL TAKES ON NYC
Middle schoolers participated in 22 Project Brooklyn and Beyond courses - a chance for students and teachers to learn all around New York City - during the last two days of school this year. Students learned about dinosaurs, attended a Carnegie Hall concert, surfed in the Rockaways, worked in a soup kitchen, explored Star Wars, discovered their inner chef, visited the UN and discussed how to fix the world's problems, investigated zombies, performed improv, flamencoed and tangoed, learned street games, made chocolate, and more. BC ALUM AND PARENT DISCUSS LIVING & TEACHING IN MIDDLE EAST
Two members of the BC community - Peter Damrosch '08 and parent Dr. Mehryar Sadeghi - visited Upper School History Chair Lorne Swarthout's Modern Middle East class recently to discuss their firsthand experiences in Jordan and Iran. "These visitors are examples of the tremendous expertise and the volunteer spirit of so many members of the BC community," Mr. Swarthout wrote. "They deepen our understanding and broaden our horizons." Read more on the BC Blog.

LOWER SCHOOL TAKES ON RUBE GOLDBERG CHALLENGE (:15 VIDEO)
Lower schoolers worked together to construct a Rube Goldberg machine this week, which deposited an aluminum can into a recycling bin. Watch video and photos.

1ST GRADERS STUDY SOLUTIONS FOR WORLD'S TRASH PROBLEM
This year the first grade investigated ways that communities deal with all the trash they generate. As part of this unit, they went on a walking tour in Freshkills Park in Staten Island, where a park representative described how they transformed the mountains of trash that used to be landfill into the park. 5TH GRADERS RESEARCH AFRICAN ARTIFACTS AT BROOKLYN MUSEUM
Fifth graders visited the Brooklyn Museum to see the "Double Take: African Innovations" exhibit. The students spent the spring semester researching African artifacts and this trip allowed them to see the ancient objects in person. Photos

3RD GRADER BECOMES LOWER SCHOOL DIRECTOR (FOR A DAY)
Zoey '25 spent June 1 as the Lower School's director for the day, during which she spoke at an assembly, met with teachers and administrators and even got to pull the fire alarm as part of a planned fire drill. She is pictured with Lower School Director Amanda Pike, who took back the reins at the end of the day. Read more about Zoey's day.

STUDENT VISIT BIRDLAND & INTERVIEW MUSICIANS
BC students got the chance to hear the Birdland Big Band at Birdland Jazz Club and even meet the players, including Prince's trumpet player and a trumpeter from In the Heights.

UPPER SCHOOL & 6TH GRADERS EXHIBIT ARTWORK
Sixth graders presented their visual artwork at a Retrospective Art Showcase (photos). Freshmen, sophomores and juniors also had an end-of-year exhibition of their paintings and drawings.

SIXTH GRADE PROPOSES SOLUTIONS TO WATER CRISIS
Sixth graders wrapped up their water unit by presenting their ideas on how to solve the world's water crisis. Photos

STUDENTS DESIGN MODELS FOR LIBRARIES OF THE FUTURE
The 38 fifth through eighth graders in the Middle School Design elective completed the course by building models of community libraries of the future and presenting them in a critique with visiting architect and BC parent Mark Timmins. Photos

LOWER SCHOOL CELEBRATES READING
Lower School students celebrated reading and heard from Brooklyn Public Library representatives about how they can use the library over the summer (and throughout the year) at an assembly last week. They also had a chance this week to pick out new books at the BC Book Fair! Photos.
