PARENTS AS READING PARTNERS AT THE LOWER SCHOOL
First graders read with their parents this morning during "Parents as Reading Partners"! Every month parents are invited into the classroom to learn about alternating subjects - including reading, math and other subjects, in English and  Spanish - alongside their children.


BC SENIOR PUBLISHES ESSAY IN NATIONAL PUBLICATION
 Congrats to Jack O. '16 whose essay - "I Should I Would I Could" - has been published in Iris (Creating Iris), an LGBTQ-themed literary magazine written by teens. Jack, who grew up in an LGBTQ family, writes about prejudice he encountered in a discussion on gay marriage. Read his essay here (start on pg. 5)
 

THIS WEEK'S SENIOR SPEAKERS
This week's senior speakers were (left to right) Henry P. and Christian D.! Henry discussed the importance of taking opportunities as they come to you. Although he has let many opportunities pass him by, he explained, he has never regretted taking one. Christian recounted his experience winning a fierce dance competition as a camp counselor. Don't let anyone bring you down, he said, always push your limits.


BC VARSITY COACH GETS SUCCESS TIPS FROM NOTRE DAME
Carmine Giovino, Boys Varsity Basketball head coach and associate director of athletics, recently visited Notre Dame Men's Basketball for tips on how to make BC's state champions even better this season.  He says, "These rigorous programs and high standards often mean both Berkeley Carroll and Notre Dame need to be creative in how they approach their basketball programs."  Read his article on the BC blog for more about what he learned.

5TH GRADE CELEBRATES DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
In celebration of Day of the Dead (Dķa de los Muertos), fifth graders created an altar and calaveras (skulls) honoring someone special to them who has passed away. Family and friends helped students celebrate at the exhibit's opening Monday after school. Day of the Dead bread from Panaderķa Don Paco Lopez in Sunset Park, which the Spanish Explorations elective picked it out on a field trip last week, was served along with Mexican lemonade. Plus, the Middle School Jazz Band played in the Lincoln Place lobby. More photos.
 

STORYCORPS FOUNDER SPEAKS TO UPPER SCHOOL  
StoryCorps Founder David Isay spoke to BC's Upper School about the organization's history and mission and encouraged students to participate in The Great Thanksgiving Listen - a project BC has been heavily involved with - later this month. Isay also played a number of previously recorded interviews - the heart of StoryCorps' mission to share and preserve people's stories- and animated shorts.
"I wanted to try something that took documentary and turned it on its head," Isay said. "It's a project about listening, it's a project about connection."

  
JAZZ BANDS PLAY NYC MARATHON AND SPOOKTACKULAR 
A good time was had by all as the Middle and Upper School Bands rocked it out for the fifty thousand runners in the NYC MarathonOur students were also featured in News12's coverage of The Halloween Spooktackular! Watch it here.    
 
   
HALLOWEEN PARTIES   
Halloween at BC was a festive affair! The Lower, Middle and Upper School celebrated last week with costume contests, mummy wrapping and plenty of spooky spirit (photos). The Parent Association also hosted A Very Grimm Halloween Party, featuring a performance of "Hansel and Gretel" by the Tanglewood Marionette Company, lunch in the Oktoberfest Garden, a spooky haunted forest, arts and crafts, a photo booth and more (photos).
