HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE LIVING WAX MUSEUM
Berkeley Carroll was filled with movers and shakers, from Richard Nixon to Oprah Winfrey, on Tuesday at the Living Wax Museum! This annual tradition challenges 8th graders to research one historical or current figure who they embody at the museum -- answering questions in character for family, friends and faculty. Candid shots are here. Photo gallery coming soon.

8th GRADERS TEACH 2ND GRADERS ABOUT URBAN DESIGN
Urban living is on the rise worldwide and has many advantages, among them city dwellers generate smaller carbon footprints and enjoy cleaner water than their suburban counterparts. But cities get a bad reputation when they aren't properly planned and designed.
In their physics project-based learning unit, our 8th Graders studied how Newton's Laws of Motion apply to urban design and then acted as both museum designers and docents in a "Pop Up Museum," teaching our 2nd graders about Newton's Laws and how they connect to the workings of our city. Photos are here. They will present their museum to the BCS community on April 8.
THIS WEEK'S SENIOR SPEAKERS
This week's senior speakers were (left to right) Rasheed Evelyn and Esme Chant! Rasheed spoke about how he has changed the way he thinks about school, realizing that education isn't just a means to an ends - it is also an opportunity to explore your interests.
Esme talked about how she has learned to incorporate risk into her life and go the extra mile. She recounted a backpacking trip during which her group ran across three grizzly bears and a man with a shotgun in a span of 15 minutes.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: BRIAR SAURO
As other schools start to follow in our footsteps and use the iPad as an education tool, NYSAIS is inviting our faculty to present what we've learned to other schools. At an upcoming workshop, Lower School Librarian Briar Sauro will detail how 'stockpiling' multiple iTunesU posts benefits students who are facile with technology, allowing them to move ahead on their own, as well as students who need more time, allowing them to get the attention they need.
AMERICAN STUDIES AUTHOR VISITS BCS
James Fraser, author of our American Studies textbook "By the People: A History of the United States," spoke to the entire junior class about his experience writing the book and the role of biases in teaching history. "Historians have to decide not only what to put in, but what to leave out," Fraser said. Read more.

KINDERGARTENERS ON THE TOWN & IN THE STUDIO
Our kindergarteners learned a lot and had fun on trips to the Brooklyn Children's Museum and Norman and Jules toy store, as part of their studies on what makes up a community!
And then they brightened our winter days by creating unique compositions of concentric shapes like triangles, squares, rectangles and circles. They filled them in with dazzling colors and the results were amazing!
