2014 SUMMER SCIENCE COURSES
|
We are excited to have the opportunity to offer science courses this summer for children on the Cape. Partnering with the Motorola Solutions Foundation, we hope to engage children in activities that will excite their imagination and make use of their problem solving skills.
· We are fortunate to have experienced teachers from our schools who offer a wide variety of courses for you.
· All courses with the exception of the astronomy course will be held in our new education center on the Marconi/RCA campus.
· The astronomy course will be held at the well-equipped Harwich Observatory behind the Harwich Elementary and Middle Schools.
· Course descriptions are listed below.
The complete brochure and the registration form can be seen on our website:

Amazing Astronomy!
Search the skies and learn how to navigate and locate the many cosmic wonders above us! Students will have the opportunity to operate powerful optical instruments that will deliver exhilarating views of the heavens! Be a part of our astro-crew and discover the workings of a real observatory - the computer controlled telescopes, sky-mapping software, networking with other observatories around the globe and viewing videos sent to us from the international space station. Students will engage in astronomical games, make handy astronomer's tools and use specialized equipment to examine sun spots. We will even have an evening Star Party where you will take a ride to the cosmos on a journey you'll never forget!
PLEASE NOTE:
This class is held at the Harwich Observatory behind Harwich Elementary School and Harwich Middle School.

Marine STEMania!

Specifically designed to combine our rich, Cape Cod marine environment and STEM concepts, students will explore the geological formation of Cape Cod, then use their knowledge to make a magnetic compass. Students will design and make sampling equipment for temperature, salinity, turbidity, density, and depth. This equipment will be used to collect samples from the shore as well as from the water on a special boat trip for the team! Students will analyze the samples, report their data, and culminate the weeks experience by taking a field trip to the aqua farming facility located on Stage Island Road. (Week Three, July 28th-August 1st, will be held in the afternoon at 12:30 - 3:30.)

 | Elements of Summer |
Elements of Summer!
A chemistry workshop based on labs related to the periodic table of the elements. Have you ever wondered why hydrogen burns, oxygen supports burning, but H2O puts out fires? To answer this question and others, students will participate in such activities as decomposing water, building compounds, testing hydrogen fuel cell cars, and using glow sticks to learn about chemical reaction rates. Students will also make slime and crystal creations to take home!

 | Sounds of Summer |
Sounds Like Summer!
Have you ever wondered what it sounds like in outer space or how sound travels underwater? Learn about the physics of sound waves and communication systems. Students will participate in a variety of hands-on experiments including the creation of string telephones, a party line, and exploration of how sound travels. Students will even have the opportunity to use Morse Code to encode and decode messages with telegraph mechanisms!
