The "Hotel"
"Hotel" was the name the Marconi Company gave to large residential facilities built for its own operating staff. When the fortunes of war blocked the final completion of the Chatham Port station, the doors of the Hotel were opened to the summer tourist trade, briefly doing business under the name "Hotel Nautilus." In 1920, under RCA, the Hotel began to serve its intended purpose, a residence for unmarried wireless operators. The occupants wittily dubbed it Hotel de Gink, borrowing from a contemporary social movement that provided shelter for hoboes.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO
Ed Moxon
CMMC Historian
DID YOU SEE THIS IN THE NEWSPAPER?
Likely not, since it appeared just over 100 years ago - March, 1914.
With these few words, the Chatham Port correspondent of the Harwich Independent alerted the citizenry to the coming of the sprawling wireless receiving station that today is the home of CMMC.
The rest of that year was a busy one for the construction crews, as they transformed the rustic Chatham Port landscape.
Now, in 2014, CMMC is preparing to re-open the 1914 Hotel building, renovated to include education, exhibition, and office space.
Visitors to the museum this season will see a chronicle of the times and events that would destine Chatham Radio to be renowned among mariners of the world for most of the 20th Century.

Centennial Events
The Grand Opening celebration is only the beginning . . .
- This year's exhibits in the Hotel will showcase the marvels of today's wireless technology such as tracking sharks and ships as they cross the ocean.
- An expanded summer education program for children will include interactive classes on astronomy, geology, chemistry. Adults will be invited to attend new evening sessions.
- A walking trail with signage takes visitors through the antenna field.
You can be part of our celebration by renewing your CMMC membership today. While renewing, you might consider the family membership that provides unlimited admission for you and 5 family members each visit. After all, CMMC is a perfect place to bring visitors to better understand a technology that has a rich history right here on Cape Cod and that transformed our world.
