NEARING COMPLETION
CMMC is nearing completion of the renovation and restoration of the historic 1914 Marconi "Hotel" building as our new Education Center and administrative offices. When completed this center will have expanded exhibits and a large function area for events, lectures and museum related activities.
The former "Hotel Nautilus" is the centerpiece of the historic Marconi/RCA Campus buildings, antenna field and waking trails.
The renovation started in the spring, after CMMC signed the lease with the Town of Chatham; it has been intense and complicated. With the oversight/management of our general contractor Rick Roy, his staff and subcontractors, work at the hotel is approaching completion. Final building code inspections and initial occupancy are slated for sometime later in the fall.
A LOT STILL TO BE DONE
Over the winter, we will be completing the interior finishes, furnishing the offices, classroom, expanded archive room, kitchen and meeting rooms.
The renovation has been a cooperative effort with the Chatham Community Development Officials and preservation consultants. The 100-year-old building had many challenges from extensive lead paint, to the current code requirements for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and fire safety sprinkler systems. The building needed to meet these requirements and still maintain the historic character of the National Register building. Upon completion the new Education Center will be a modern "state of the art" facility with the feel of 1914 in our function room as we gather around the fireplace.
