Experience
Amateur Radio
first hand.
WA1WCC
During Hurricane Katrina, Amateur Radio - often called "Ham Radio" - was often the ONLY way people could communicate, and hundreds of volunteer "hams" traveled south to save lives and property. When Hurricane Irene threatened the Cape in 2012, amateur radio was again called on to help Red Cross shelters communicate with police, fire and other government and relief agencies if needed. When trouble is brewing, Amateur Radio's people are often the first to provide rescuers with critical information and communications.
Learn why it is of importance to you and your community. Meet and talk with Cape Cod ham radio operators at the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center's amateur radio station, WA1WCC, and see what the Amateur Radio Service is all about.
The amateur station commemorates the commercial station WCC, once in operation at the center. The public will be able to listen in as hams from all over the Cape talk to stations all over the world, just as the operators at WCC used to, with a twist....not only will they hear the same Morse code used by the operators at WCC, but also more modern communications techniques.
Licensed amateur radio enthusiasts will be operating the station and demonstrating many modes of communication. They will also answer your questions including how to get an amateur radio license.
