Greetings!
You are invited to attend our Annual Meeting on Saturday, May 11 at the Chatham Community Center. The meeting will start at 10:00 am. Coffee will be served at 9:30. The agenda for the meeting is shown below.
The theme of this year's meeting is our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiative that has been funded for the past 2 years by grants from the Verizon Foundation. The program to write lesson plans for students in our schools is built around a partnership between CMMC, the Monomoy School District and the MIT Club of Cape Cod. We are fortunate to have three representatives from the Monomoy Schools come to share their perspectives about our STEM program and the future opportunities they foresee for our children. Brief synopses of their talks are included below.
Following the meeting members and volunteers are invited to an afternoon Open House at the Marconi Center from 1-4pm to view refreshed and enhanced exhibits. From 1 to 2pm films will be shown in the Theater and from 2-4 specialists in various areas of the Center exhibits will be on hand from to informally provide prospective and future volunteers with historic background and how the Chatham Station relayed vital messages. CMMC Annual Meeting Program
Carla Blanchard - Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Monomoy District
Her presentation will focus on ways the Monomoy District is supporting STEM programs provide rigor and relevance so every student is STEM literate upon graduation from high school and a greater number of students chose post secondary education and training in STEM disciplines. In addition, the speakers will examine the role CMMC plays in meeting these goals.
Cherian Armstrong - Teacher/ Librarian, Chatham Elementary School
Recently, with Cheri's leadership, CMMC launched a series of family STEM nights. These evenings provided opportunities for children and their parents to experience the engineering process. Activities of this kind inspire creativity and problem solving. They directly correspond to the mission of CMMC. In the photo below engineers and families are taking part in STEM Night projects.
Annie Haven - Sixth Grade Teacher, Monomoy Middle School
As the author of the sixth grade Marconi curriculum focusing on sound waves and communication systems, Annie will present a slideshow with photos highlighting the important unit lessons and how students access those lessons. Altogether, the unit immerses students in the study of sound for five weeks. During that time students learn about sound waves, including wave behavior and measurement, electromagnetism, sound in vacuum, variables affecting the construction of working string can telephones, Morse code, and the history of the telephone. She will conclude with the proposed schedule for the summer science program.
