The History Project is pleased to announce that Massachusetts State Representative Byron Rushing has been named the 2014 recipient of the HistoryMaker Award, which recognizes individuals who have made contributions of historic proportions to New England's GLBT community.

During his thirty-two years (and counting) in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, The Hon. Byron Rushing has been an indefatigable leader and ally to the Commonwealth's GLBT communities and diverse residents. From sponsoring the gay rights bill in the 1980s and the law to end discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in public schools in the 1990s, to his leadership during the constitutional convention to maintain marriage equality in Massachusetts, he has demonstrated a clear and powerful commitment to equality and to human and civil rights. The History Project also salutes his outstanding work in local history, from serving as President of the Museum of Afro-American History and his role in the restoration of the African Meeting House, to his work with the Roxbury Historical Society.

Notes Neal Kane, chair of The History Project, "The amazing strides that New England's GLBT community has made in recent decades, which The History Project documents and preserves, would not have been achieved without the contributions of inspiring allies like Byron Rushing. We are extremely pleased and proud to have Byron join the ranks of outstanding community leaders who have received the HistoryMaker Award."

We hope you'll join us on Thursday, October 2, to help us celebrate this treasured ally to the Commonwealth's GLBT residents, and to support The History Project in our efforts to document, preserve, and share New England's GLBT history. Tickets to this event are $75 and are available online here or by sending a check to The History Project, 29 Stanhope Street, Boston, MA 02116.

We look forward to seeing you on October 2.
