The Section on Pediatrics Annual Conference will be held November 6-8, 2015, in Pittsburgh, PA (preconference courses will be November 4-5).Visit www.sopac.us to register and to find out more about:
  • Tri My Best Triathlon (still seeking athletes and "buddies" - deadline extended to August 30):Twenty athletes will compete in swim, bike, and run events with adaptations and modifications with a buddy volunteer assisting them. Applications must be in by Aug 30 in order to get the needed equipment and order T-shirts. Please submit applications now! The process is simple, just click here.

Advanced Clinical Practice in Pediatric Physical Therapy Course: Advance Registration Closes August 31  

The 17th Annual ACP in Pediatric Physical Therapy Course will be held September 18-20, 2015, in Memphis, TN. This 2.5-day course is geared toward advanced practice and is intended for experienced pediatric physical therapists who have a strong desire to investigate current theories and evidence-based practice across settings. Physical therapists who are considering taking the ABPTS examination are particularly encouraged to participate as part of their review. For more information, please visit the ACP page. Submissions for SoP Research Grants, Mentored Research Grants, and Planning Grants Due September 1  

The SOP research grants provide funding to assist physical therapist investigators and to encourage research that will add to the body of knowledge related to improvement of pediatric physical therapy. Research Grants (RG1 up to $30,000 or RG2 up to $10,000) are available to assist with a 1-year research study that investigates questions of importance to pediatric physical therapy. Mentored Research Grants up to $10,000 can be used to support post-professional thesis, dissertation, or other student research, and are also appropriate for new and emerging clinical researchers. Periodically, Planning Grants up to $30,000 are available to support the development of multi-site clinical research related to the topic of a Section Research Summit. A list of Section grants available this year, as well as due dates, application forms, and details of each grant can be found on the Section website at www.pediatricapta.org under Members, then Research & Grants. Questions regarding your proposals can be sent to the  Section's Research Chair, listed under About Us, then Leadership.  

Call for Section on Pediatrics Awards: Submissions Due October 1  

APTA Section on Pediatrics members are encouraged to nominate a coworker, a friend, someone in their program, or themselves! Nomination forms and additional information regarding these and other Section awards are available at www.pediatricapta.org under Members/Awards & Scholarships. The Section is seeking nominations for the following awards, to be presented at the SOP Business Meeting at the Combined Sections Meeting in February:
  • Service Awards: Jeanne Fischer Distinguished Mentorship Award, George "Bud" DeHaven Service Award, Susan Effgen Advocacy Award, Distinguished Service Award for External Advocates
     
  • Clinician Award: Outstanding Pediatric Clinical Practice Award
  •  Research Awards: Dissertation Award, Stephen Haley Research Award
  • Scholarships & Grants: Carol Gildenberg Dichter Memorial PCS Scholarships, Diversity Development Scholarship, CSM Student/New Professional Attendance Scholarships

SoPAC 2016: Call for Proposals and Posters Is Open

It's time to start thinking about your proposal for SoPAC 2016, to be held November 11-13, 2016 (preconference courses November 9-10) at the Keystone Resort, north of Denver in Colorado. The link to the proposal submission site is posted www.sopac.us under Speakers.Proposals for SoPAC 2016 sessions and preconference courses will be accepted through January 7, 2016; poster submissions will be accepted through May 1, 2016.  

Call for Nominations for Cardio Section's Linda Crane Memorial Lecture Award  

The Linda Crane Memorial Lecture Award acknowledges an individual who has made outstanding and enduring contributions to the practice of physical therapy as exemplified in the professional career of Linda Crane. Eligibility criteria include membership in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary, Education OR Pediatric Section. Demonstration of expertise in clinical practice, academic practice, or research, and contributions to APTA at the state, section, or national level are required. Additional information is posted on the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section website . Nominations may be sent to Paul Ricard with the person's name, reasons for nomination, and any references.
Surveys by and for SOP Members
Consistency of referral policies for PT and OT in the NICU: This project aims to study the consistency of referral criteria for PT/OT in NICUs throughout the US by surveying therapists practicing in the NICU. Questions and comments can be directed to Alicia Fernandez-Fernandez. Survey end date: TBD.

 

Pediatric Physical Therapists Knowledge and Implementation of Fitness, Wellness and Health Promotion Behaviors: The purpose of this survey is to investigate pediatric physical therapists' knowledge regarding health promotion, and to determine if pediatric physical therapists are routinely assessing wellness attributes and/or incorporating health promotion into their plan of care. Questions and comments can be directed to Joyce Lammers and Lindsay Elchert. Survey end date: TBD.
