SoP Offers Research Grants, Mentored Research Grants, and Planning Grants to Section Members: Due September 1
|
The SOP research grants provide funding to assist physical therapist investigators and to encourage research that will add to the body of knowledge related to improvement of pediatric physical therapy. Research Grants (RG1 up to $30,000 or RG2 up to $10,000) are available to assist with a 1-year research study that investigates questions of importance to pediatric physical therapy. Mentored Research Grants up to $10,000 can be used to support post-professional thesis, dissertation, or other student research, and are also appropriate for new and emerging clinical researchers. Periodically, Planning Grants up to $30,000 are available to support the development of multi-site clinical research related to the topic of a Section Research Summit. A list of Section grants available this year, as well as due dates, application forms, and details of each grant can be found on the Section website at www.pediatricapta.org under Research & Awards. - Fibromyalgia study done by amplified musculoskeletal pain team at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The average pain levels of 64 teens with fibromyalgia went from a 7.1 (at initial evaluation) to a 2 (at the 1-year follow up)-33% actually reported no pain. The average functional disability inventory scores went from moderately disabled to not disabled. No pain medication was used. This is a paradigm-shift because fibromyalgia patients are typically told to "take it slow" and "don't push yourself, you'll cause a flare up," so it appears that we need to rethink the dialogue and start treating these patients (at least pediatric patients) with much more intense physical and occupational therapy.

Amidst a family's chronic sorrow over the loss of what would have been, the pediatric physical therapist may experience emotional stress in the form of compassion fatigue and burnout. This study 's aim is to uncover a curricular model of evidence based self care to offer well-being and resilience in this population. Questions and comments can be directed to
