Leave the Butterflied Turkey with Fennel to the fancy-pants chefs. Your guests will love every last bite of this kid-friendly Thanksgiving menu, with its Cheesy Potatoes, Crinkly Carrot Fries and Applesauce Cake with Caramel Sauce. Even better, get your kids in the kitchen chopping, stirring and sampling. Read these tips for cooking with kids, and be sure to share a few cheesy food jokes while you work.
2. Craftin'
Teach your kids the true meaning of the holiday by making a Gratitude Jar. While your turkey's roasting, have guests write down what they're thankful for on pretty slips of paper. Sprinkle the notes into a big glass jar or vase, tie a big bow around the center and use it as the centerpiece for your feast. Your kids can decorate the room with Gratitude Turkeys, Falling Leaves motifs or homemade napkin rings.
3. Conversatin'
With generations gathered 'round your holiday table, kick off some lively discussions with The Thanksgiving Box of Questions (or print out these free Thanksgiving dinner conversation starters.) You might learn something new about Grandma! And as you whip out the whipped cream, challenge your guests with this free printable turkey trivia game. (How fast can a turkey run? Not fast enough.) 500 Clown Trapped is Harrowing Fun
Chaos Ensues at Segerstrom Center for the Arts
Treat yourself to 500 Clown's signature mix of hilarious physicality, raw emotion and powerful storytelling December 1 and 2 at Segerstrom Center for the Arts.
In their latest production, 500 Clown Trapped, the troupe becomes ensnared, and the situation spirals out of control the harder they try to free themselves. Slapstick mishaps, vaudevillian turns and untiring resilience are put into play as the clowns work to escape.
Founded in 2001, the company uses action, improvisation and circus arts to tell long-form dramatic stories that catapult the performers into physical and emotional risk. It takes two years to create each of their shows, but they evolve with continued rehearsing, performing and refining in response to audiences.
The performance is part of Segerstrom Center's 2012-13 Family Series, designed especially for kids ages 4 and up. All Family Series shows feature free creative-play activities and a reading area in the theater lobby an hour before each performance, designed to nurture critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
Segerstrom Center of the Arts · Saturday, December 1, 1 p.m.; and Sunday, December 2, 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. · Tickets: $20. Family Series Season Subscription also available. · 600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. Map it.
