United Way of Southwest Minnesota is an autonomous, local organization working to create lasting changes in people's lives and the communities in Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Yellow Medicine and western Redwood Counties of Minnesota.  "With our campaign closing on Jan 31st, we are making the last push to hit our goal of $555,555.55, shared Matt Weller, chair of the 2013-2014 campaign.  It has been a great campaign so far with $500,731.96 being raised as of Jan 10th.  We are looking forward to the continued support from the generous individuals and businesses of SW MN.  This will ensure that we reach our goal so we can improve lives in all communities in SW Minnesota.  Remember your investment stays right here in SW MN."

United Way of Southwest Minnesota is a separately incorporated non-profit that is governed by its own local 24 member Board of Directors working to create lasting change in people's lives. There are no fund-raising quotas and all resources are under local control and decision-making. Last year the United Way received 35% more grant requests than dollars available. All funds raised during the annual campaign will be used to support local programs and services in the area that focus on education, income (financial stability), health, united against hunger and promoting safety and well-being. 

Grant applications are reviewed through a community investment process. Volunteers from across the five county service area review grant applications, meet/interview program applicants, complete a matrix form to recommend or not recommend grant funding and at what level. Community recommendations go to the United Way board of directors for final approval.  This process takes place in the spring following the close of the campaign.
