1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
|  The United Way of Southwest Minnesota will launch 1000 Books Before Kindergarten in collaboration with 14 area libraries in early 2014. Participating libraries include: Balaton, Canby, Clarkfield, Cottonwood, Dawson, Fulda, Ivanhoe, Granite Falls, Lake Benton, Marshall-Lyon County, Minneota, Tracy, Tyler and Westbrook. Parents will register children at their home library. Watch the United Way website www.UnitedWaySWMN.org, the United Way of Southwest Minnesota Facebook page, area newspapers and radio stations for official launch information about when your library will begin taking enrollment. Enrollment will begin in early 2014. Program Goals include: - Encourage families to read aloud frequently to children
- Introduce children to a wide range of excellent books to promote pre-literacy so children enter school ready to learn
- Encourage regular library use by families and enhance our existing mobile learning outreach to daycares and preschools
- Complement our existing programming throughout our service area; such as the Imagination Library, Wild About Kindergarten bags, summer/winter reading programs, parent education, etc.

Campaign Update
$425,485.26 in donations and pledges have been recorded to date during the 2013-14 annual fund-raising campaign. This is 76.6% of the campaign goal of $555,555.55.
The need is great. Last year, grant requests were 35% more than funds available.
All funds raised during the annual campaign will be used to support local programs and services in this area that focus on education, income (financial stability), health, united against hunger and promoting safety and well-being.

The United Way of Southwest Minnesota is committed to long lasting community change in Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Yellow Medicine and western Redwood counties.
