My Free Taxes

New to our area this year is the ability for more people to access free online tax preparation software (Federal and State tax returns) for individuals and families with combined incomes of $57,000 or less.  This service extends the opportunity for free tax preparation for people in this area.

For people who need assistance filing their taxes and who have qualifying incomes, please make an appointment with United Way community partner Western Community Action's Free Tax Clinic. Click here for more information about the tax clinics and a link to the free online service.

The free online service is made available by The Walmart Foundation in partnership with Goodwill Industries, United Way Worldwide, and the National Disability Institute.  The filing software is provided by H&R Block.

Last year the WCA Free Tax Clinic helped bring back
$1,016,272 in tax refunds to local people.
The 2012-13 Community Campaign Was Successful

A total of $546,295 was raised in this area during the 2012-13 fund-raising campaign.  This is an increase of more than $30,000 over last year's campaign.

Jeremy Gossen, President of the board of directors said, "We are truly blessed here in Southwest Minnesota.  LIVE UNITED is not just a slogan, but a way of life in our area.  Thank you to all who invest time and resources into our communities through the United Way of Southwest Minnesota.  These investments will help us leave our communities stronger than we found them."

"United Way of Southwest Minnesota is committed to making sure the money that has been raised will be used to make a difference in people's lives, right here where we live," said Ruth Ascher, Executive Director.  "Our sincere appreciation goes to everyone who donated and who generously invested in the future of this area."

Funds that have been raised will go to work in local programs that focus on the education, income and health of people in this area.  United Way of Southwest Minnesota will continue to work in several collaborative efforts with community partners to address important issues like building school readiness for young children, promoting safety and well-being and fighting hunger.

Max & Ruby Read-a-Ramas Underway

2013 winter read-a-ramas

Tim Quist and his 2 year old daughter Jane took part in the Read-a-Rama held at Tracy Elementary School recently.  Parents and children listened to stories and tried out some school readiness building activities.   Read-a-Ramas will continue in Canby, Lynd and at Marshall Head Start during February.  Check our webpage for the schedule.  These events are sponsored by United Way Success By 6 with the goal of helping prepare children for school success.
