Local Bird News

Seems like all of our customers are seeing migrating

Rose-breasted Grosbeaks
this week. Both the colorful male, shown above, and the drabber, streaky-brown female, love to eat sunflower seed, insects, fruit and berries with their huge, conical beaks. The males sing a beautiful robin-like song and both give a metallic chink! call note.

Several customers have asked us on Facebook where the grosbeaks go after we see them in the Spring. Rose-breasted Grosbeaks
breed in open deciduous woods across most of Canada and the northeastern U.S., barely reaching down into extreme north Georgia.

Many of you are also reporting

Indigo Buntings
(male shown above) visiting feeders for their favorite seed,
White Millet.
Most buntings we see in migration are passing through, but some do stay and spend their summers in weedy or brushy fields, roadsides and power line cuts.

Nothing says Spring quite like a feeder covered in grosbeaks, buntings, cardinals and goldfinches!
