Georgia Hummers
reports that most of the Rufous Hummingbirds
on site during the "Polar Vortex" made it through the cold spell just fine. Rufous spend their summers in the Pacific Northwest, some breeding as far north as Alaska, so they are hardy little birds. They manage low temperatures by going into torpor (a semi-conscious state) at night to conserve energy.

Yellow-rumped Warbler numbers have jumped this week. We have a couple dozen or so, chipping loudly and fighting over whose turn it is at our suet feeders. These "butterbutts," as they are nick-named, are quite animated and fun to watch!
