Every year, Ron Pittaway of Ontario, Canada, publishes a report of his predictions for winter finch irruptions. Remember all of the Pine Siskins we had last year? These irruptions are based on food availability up north, which is why some years we have an abundance of Pine Siskins, Purple Finches and even Red-breasted Nuthatches. When the main food source for these birds is scarce, they move further south, and we experience what is called an irruption year.  | | Pine Siskins |
Unfortunately for bird watchers here in Georgia, this does not look like it will be a good winter for finches. Cone and seed crops are plentiful in the boreal forests of Canada, and many of these birds will be able to winter in the far north. We may still see some (in fact a small flock of Pine Siskins was spotted at Price Park in Kennesaw last week), but the huge numbers we experienced last year are not likely to be repeated this winter. Richard and Nancy Cole started a cottage business in a spare bedroom. They created a better bird seed and packaged it in old AJC newspaper bags.
