Banded Ruby-throat

The weather held out for  the banding event at the
Sunflower Farm Festival
on Saturday, and Julia and Karen captured and banded twenty-four Ruby-throated Hummingbirds.
They also recaptured three birds that were already wearing bands! Two of the hummers were banded at last year's festival, but the third was banded way back in 2011! At the time of banding, this particular female Ruby-throat was an adult, so that makes her at least three years old!

As always, it was great to see so many customers and friends at our event. If you missed us at the Sunflower Farm, please join us at our next banding event at
Smith-Gilbert Gardens on August 24th,
or at the
Buford Bird Watcher
on September 7th.

We'll remind you again as these events get closer, and of course, if you "Like" us on

you will always be in the know about all things Bird Watcher!

Hi Birdwatchers!

Tough Bird Feeder Guard Have you heard about the shocking new development at our stores? We have a great new product available that is the brainchild of Bird Watcher founder Richard Cole. It's the Tough Bird Feeder Guard!

The Feeder Guard is an electronic baffle that can be installed on just about any pole or shepherd hook and keeps pesky squirrels, raccoons, and even snakes from climbing up to your bird feeder or bird house! Using a 9-volt battery, the baffle gives off a static shock when touched, which discourages unwanted critters. Your pole remains safe to touch at all times, and by design the guard is harmless to the birds.

Feedback on this product has been very positive so far and we couldn't be more thrilled! It even worked where no other baffle could - a Buford customer had a squirrel proof feeder on an arm off the deck, but raccoons were still able to climb out to it. Before the Feeder Guard, the only solution would have been to bring the feeder in every night. We are pleased to announce the guard worked, and the customer came in and purchased a second unit!

It has been very exciting to watch a product go from the idea and development stages to a real packaged item for sale in our stores. The process took about two years, and the end result is fantastic! And at $49.99, it won't break the bank, but it will protect your bird feeder!
