This has been a busy migration season, with employees and customers alike reporting good numbers of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Indigo Buntings at feeders! American Goldfinchesare sporting their bright yellow breeding plumage, and if you are fortunate enough to have all three on a feeder at once, it really does look like spring! A Short-tailed Hawk(above) was big news over the weekend in south Georgia. This first state record bird was spotted in Hinesville, Georgia on Saturday and Sunday, and was seen and photographed by a few lucky birders. While common in the neotropics south to Argentina, this species was until recently only known to breed in central and south Florida. In the past few years it has also been breeding in Arizona, and a few vagrants have shown up in Texas and New Mexico. What an exciting find for Georgia! Atlanta Audubon has a full calendar of field trips all over town, including hot spots like Kennesaw Mountain and Piedmont Park.
