Georgia birders have been treated to three mega-rarities this month - the Snowy Owl continues on the coast, now spending time on Tybee Island, sitting on condo rooftops near the pier. A
Northern Lapwing, a stunning European plover, is hanging out in a farm field in Statesboro with a flock of Killdeer, and a White-winged Crossbill (above) has been sporadically visiting a feeder in Waynesboro. Both the lapwing and the crossbill are new state record birds!

 Hi Birdwatchers!

"I'd sure like to kill that Mockingbird!" is a phrase we often hear this time of year. The Northern Mockingbird is a common bird found in all types of habitats across the United States, especially in neighborhoods where they like to perch on telephone wires and rooftops, and nest in small trees and thickets. They can also be very territorial when it comes to guarding winter food sources and nesting sites, often chasing perceived competitors like Bluebirds and Robins. Studies have shown that they can recognize people who have threatened their nest or young and will sometimes fly at them, and often chase cats and dogs.

Not a colorful bird, the Mocker is pale gray on its head, back and wings, and white beneath. They often raise their wings to scare up insects -  flashing their large white wing patches as they hop along the ground. They also have white outer tail feathers that can be seen in flight. Mockingbirds are beautiful songsters, often singing late into the night during the spring and summer. They love insects (especially live mealworms), suet, fruit and berries.

If you do have a bully of a Mockingbird, try spreading your feeders around the yard to prevent one bird from monopolizing all the feeders. Lure him away from your seed feeders with grapes or suet. But please don't try to kill them. They are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and it is against the law to harm them. Show the Mocker some love, or at the very least - tolerance. We promise they won't run off all your birds. Besides, hummingbirds are just as territorial, and people think they're cute!
