Local Bird News

White-throated sparrow
Reports of
winter sparrows have really increased in the last week! Several customers have seen White-throated Sparrows (above) and Dark-eyed Juncos scratching around under the feeders. But the bird of the week has to be the Pine Siskin!
It seems like these birds were everywhere and in huge flocks numbering in the hundreds. Many of you reported big numbers of siskins wiping out feeders, and while there was a little complaining about having to purchase more seed already, we could also see the excitement at finally having some steady bird activity!

Hi Birdwatchers!

Richard and Nancy then
Did you know that this month marks the 24th Anniversary of our very first store opening? We can hardly believe it! Bird Watcher Supply Company actually got its start in 1984 as For the Birds. Richard and Nancy Cole had always been interested in nature and became more focused on wild birds after getting a bird feeder as a gift. They soon found themselves mixing their own bird seed blends since the birds didn't seem to like the grocery store mixes they were using.

It wasn't long before friends and neighbors were asking Richard and Nancy for their great bird seed and for their opinions on the best birding products to use. A cottage business was born. A spare bedroom became the office, warehouse, and seed packing facility. Their backyard became the testing lab where they gained much of their knowledge of wild birds and birding products.

Richard and Nancy took orders and packaged seed during the week and made deliveries to their friends on the weekends when they were not at their real jobs. As word spread, the orders increased, and before long the business took over the garage. After much dreaming, planning and design work, they took a deep breath, mortgaged their life, and opened their first store, Bird Watcher Supply, in 1988. Nancy quit her job and ran the store while Richard helped out in the evenings and on weekends. The rest is history!

Richard and Nancy 2012 The Coles believed that they should treat all their customers like friends by giving them the best service, the best advice, a great selection of products and, of course, great prices. Twenty-four years and six stores later, they still feel this way! To this day, we strive to have each of our stores well stocked and staffed by bird lovers who are knowledgeable and always willing to help. We appreciate each and every one of our customers, and thanks for 24 great years!!!

Kissing Krystals

Kissing under the Mistletoe is an old European tradition. It is believed that the Mistletoe holds magical powers from the "soul" of the mighty oak tree! It grants strength, peace, health, fertility and love to those who kiss beneath it.

Kissing Krystals have arrived just in time for the holiday season, and come in two beautiful styles - the standard mini Kissing Krystal for $12.99, and the cardinal Kissing Krystal for $21.99. Each features an acrylic crystal topped with greenery and a ribbon for hanging. Place them in doorways the traditional way, or use them to decorate the Christmas tree! They also make lovely gifts for family and friends.
