Hiram Location Closing
| |
We are sad to announce that at the end of November, we will be closing our Hiram store location after three years in business. Watch for big sales and discounts throughout the month of November as we move out the inventory at that store. A big "thank you" to our Hiram customers, and we hope you will join us at our Kennesaw store in the future!
Local Bird News
It looks like it is going to be a good winter for finches and other irruptive species! Pine Siskins (pictured above) are being reported all over Georgia as well as a few Purple Finches, and quite a few customers and staff have seen Red-breasted Nuthatchesvisiting feeders for peanuts and sunflower seed! Pine and Yellow-rumped Warblers have also arrived in big numbers along with Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets. While seed and suet feeding is typically slow this time of year, the cold morning temperatures are causing these birds to visit feeders more heavily than normal. So make sure you have plenty of food on hand! To keep up with everything that's happening in Georgia birding, The winter hummingbird season also appears to be getting off to a great start! A young male Rufous Hummingbird
was banded in Dawsonville over the weekend, and two Canton store customers - Jamie Baughman and Debbie Theisz - both have Rufous visiting feeders. Jamie's bird was banded Saturday, and Debbie's bird, pictured below, was just captured this morning! | |
Rufous Hummingbird being released
|
It's early in the winter hummingbird season yet and there have already been almost a dozen reports. Be sure to let any of our stores know if you have a wintering hummer, and you will be put in touch with one of our banders!

Hi Birdwatchers!
We couldn't resist a newsletter on "spooky" animals - bats, owls, raccoons, opossums, coyotes, flying squirrels and more! Nocturnal birds and critters aren't really scary. They are actually amazing creatures that have adapted to living in the dark.
 | |
Possums are just one of many critters that visit our yards at night
|
Bats use echolocation along with their vision to fly and hunt insects with great accuracy. They will NOT get in your hair despite what you might hear! In fact, bats along with other nocturnal birds and animals do their best to avoid humans. Bats are extremely beneficial mammals, and we encourage you to help them out by erecting bat houses to roost in, as well as raise their young. Each bat consumes thousands of mosquitoes, moths and beetles each night! Check out GeorgiaWildlife.com for more info on bats in Georgia.
 | | Barred Owl |
Owl merchandise is very trendy and everywhere now! Well, we've always thought owls were cool and we're glad everyone else caught on too! We really love these big-eyed, rodent-hunting predators! In Georgia, we have four species that breed - Screech, Barred, Barn and Great Horned Owl. Screech Owls are the most common and easiest to attract to your yard with an owl box placed about 15' high on a tree, filled with a few inches of wood shavings for nesting material. Now is the best time of year to put an owl box up since as the leaves fall, owls like to use them to hide from songbirds that will otherwise mob or harass them! They will roost in the box throughout the winter and nest in it during the spring.
 | |
Sure they can be pests, but look at that face!!!
|
Raccoons and opossums are not as well loved. They can be pesky feeder visitors, eating too much seed, making messes and even running away with bird feeders. But we still love to watch their silly antics in the yard. If you don't want to encourage them, place feeders and houses on poles with baffles.
