Hummer open bill
Ruby-throat numbers are way down, but don't take those feeders down! Ruby-throat stragglers will continue to pass through our state for the next few weeks, and we expect many more Rufous and other western hummingbirds to show up over the next few months to winter in Georgia!

This has already been an interesting fall for hummingbird reports. We've had three white (albino or leucistic) hummingbird reports - Karen Theodorou got to band one of them, a leucistic male Ruby-throat, in Cumming last month. And we've already had about six Rufous reports in Athens, Gainesville, Roswell, Whitesburg, Fitzgerald and a probable return bird in White, GA! The return bird was named Princess Julia by the homeowner, after bander Julia Elliott! Julia (the bander) hopes to recapture her once she's settled in for the winter to verify her band number!

Dark-eyed junco
Wintering Song and White-throated Sparrows, Juncos (above), Hermit Thrushes, Winter WrensCedar Waxwings, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Yellow-rumped, Palm and Orange-crowned Warblers
are all moving in! Keep an eye out for new birds showing up weekly!

Hi Birdwatchers!

Don't you just love this time of year? Our bird feeders may have slowed down, but we have had a few interesting visitors lately. Our favorite by far has to be a small flock of
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. They fed mostly on our sunflower blend, but will also go to Suet Kibbles, live and Dried Mealworms and fruit.

 Fall grosbeak

Rose-breasted Grosbeaks pass through our state in spring and fall migration. Perhaps no other bird sparks so many I.D. phone calls at the store. They really are cool looking! Spring males are striking with their black head, back and tail, white chest with a large, bright red bib and pale pink bill. Females look like a sparrow on steroids, large, streaky-brown birds with a prominent white eye-stripe and pale pink bill. Most fall males look like a combination of the adult male and female, some black patches mixed in with the streaky brown plumage. Their bibs are a duller red.

Grosbeaks often sit for long periods at feeders as they gorge on sunflower seeds. Like many migrants, they are putting on weight to be able to travel the thousands of miles to their wintering grounds in the tropics. They don't sing much in fall, but occasionally they will do a bit of their warbling, robinlike song. More likely, you will hear their metallic iiik call note.
