Research Computing Renaissance at SU 

SU's OrangeGrid and Academic Virtual Hosting Environments (AVHE) increase the University's resources for compute intensive academic research. SU's researchers can tackle new and greater computational tasks, get them done sooner, and increase the competitiveness of their grant submissions. Read more. 

The SU Bookstore is now an Apple Authorized Service Provider, and will provide related services through 'CuseTech. 'CuseTech is located on the upper level of the Bookstore in the Schine Student Center, and provides warranty and non-warranty service. Read more.  
More wireless devices are being used by more people more often in more places on campus. On a typical day at peak time more than 21,000 devices connect simultaneously to AirOrangeX. ITS has solutions in place, and plans for dealing with this booming activity.  Read more.  
SU Library staff has integrated systems to allow easy patron access to materials stored in the remote SU Library Facility, all from a single starting point in the Classic Catalog. Other institutions are taking notice, and coming to campus to take notes. Read more.

ITS has completed the process of making Syracuse University a full-fledged peer in the eduroam network. SU students, faculty and staff can now use eduroam to securely and easily connect to the Internet and the SU network while visiting other eduroam institutions, even those abroad. Read more.  
 
ITS's Online Learning Services (OLS) group was essential in transitioning the popular Syracuse Lava Project into "The Subject is Lava," a massive open online course. The instructional technology experts from OLS work to help faculty use technology in teaching and research. Read more at SU News.  
Twitter has emerged as an important tool for ITS technical support. Twitter helps ITS quickly connect with students and address technology issues. With the success of Twitter, ITS in January expanded its social media presence to Facebook and Pinterest. Read more.

Education for the masses can be replaced with one-size-fits-one learning at comparable cost. Learning analytics, designed for diversity, can inform this process. We can dispense with finding a representative sample to support external validity, since each learner is self-represented. See the story at EDUCAUSE. 

 

 

The problem with easy technology The choice between demanding and easy technologies may be crucial to technological evolution. Innovators like Alan Kay and Steve Jobs are celebrated for making previously daunting technologies usable by anyone. Summer Institute for Technology Enhanced Teaching and Learning (SITETL) logo
April 7 Is Application Deadline for Summer Institute for Technology-Enhanced Teaching & Learning. Offered twice in separate, week-long sessions, SITETL will be held May 19-23 and again on June 2-6. SITETL is an intense program for faculty members who wish to incorporate technology in their face-to-face course or move a significant component of their course online. Each session is limited to 15 participants selected through a competitive application process. The application deadline is Monday, April 7. The fourth annual Security and Network Engineering Technical Summit will convene on June 12, 2014 from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the Marist College Student Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. The cost of participation is $75 ($50 for registrations before May 1, 2014), and includes breakfast and lunch. Register for the Summit on NYSERNET's website.  

 

NYSERNet is offering an online course entitled "Administering Window Server 2012" April 28 to May 2, 2014. Participants can complete the course at any location with a reliable internet connection.
