How to Introduce Investing To Your Kids

Want to introduce investing to your kids?  Owning a share of stock is a good place to start as it will likely inspire them to track performance and allow them to experience risk and rewards through the real-time ups and downs of the market.

Why start with one share of stock vs. a mutual fund or other kind of investment?  Investing in a company you know, possibly one that you frequent and are a loyal user of their products, makes that investment personal and a lot more interesting. A more provocative investment will capture and keep the younger investor's attention and hopefully, inspire them to add to that initial investment and even invest in another company.  Here are a few tips on choosing stocks with your kids:  Choosing a stock to buy with your kids

Great list of books about money for kids

The best parenting advice I ever received was to read to my children. I made twice weekly trips to our local library and each night we would sit down after dinner and I would read aloud.  So I have compiled a list of some of my favorite books on money for kids from preschool to high school age, and maybe beyon.  Some are new (including my new book, O.M.G. Official Money Guide for Teenagers), some are classics, but they all impart a great money lesson.

New Book for Teens Offers "Secrets" to Living Financially Secure

In a recent PISA survey of 15-year olds in 18 countries, American teens posted barely passing scores when tested on their abilities to perform basic everyday financial activities.  So to help teens better understand how to manage their finances, Money Savvy Generation released its first book for teens, O.M.G. Official Money Guide for Teenagers.

This comprehensive smart money management guide was written to provide teens with the "secrets" to how to live financially secure, regardless of how much income they earn, now or in the future. Full of helpful, easy-to-read graphics and charts, O.M.G. helps make the tough subject matter of money easily accessible for teens and help them avoid those "awkward money moments".

Parents: Take Time for Frozen to "Thaw"

My daughters are way past the Frozen craze, although they did love the movie. Even so, my own parental angst to try to meet the requests of my girls came rushing back like it was yesterday when a friend, Caryn Alexander, reached out for help to find the coveted Elsa costume from Disney's movie, Frozen.  Caryn was my younger daughter's first grade teacher.  Her lovely daughter Elizabeth is a 5-year-old whose greatest wish for her birthday was to get the Elsa dress.  It had to be Elsa - not Anna. Anna is easier to get. But Elsa, not so much.

So, faced with a child's "heart's desire" for a highly sought after product, what is a parent to do next? Here are some tips I shared with Caryn to help:
