Seminar topics include:
  • Understanding the HTS/Schedule B classification system
  • Rules of Interpretation
  • Review U.S. goods returned/repairs/warranty classifications
  • Abbreviations and units of quantity/measure
  • Determining the difference between duty, user fees, and antidumping/countervailing duties
All attendees are invited to stay for a complimentary Luncheon Program, organized by the Foreign Trade Zone Corporation of Southern Pennsylvania, and learn about the benefits of the Foreign Trade Zone program in our region.  More information is available on our website.

SME's Asked to Comment on EU Trade Barriers

Recently the United States began to negotiate a wide-ranging free trade and investment agreement with the European Union.  The U.S. Trade Representative has asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to study the trade barriers that U.S. Small and Medium Enterprises often face when exporting to the EU, especially those that affect SMEs more than large firms.

The International Trade Commission is reaching out to gather the views of a wide variety of SMEs that export to the EU. Specifically, they are interested in the following:

  • EU-wide barriers to trade that limit US SME exports of any goods or services
  • Specific trade barriers in individual EU countries
  • Suggestions for increasing exports to the EU from SMEs.
  • All relevant details regarding specific barriers and the affected products or services and which barriers appear most important in constraining exports.

The Commission is holding hearings and accepting responses by mail and email. More information about responding and background about the investigation are available on the project webpage.

Gannett Fleming Awarded Solid Waste Project in Saudi Arabia

Nearly 3 million Muslims from many different countries converge on Saudi Arabia every year to perform a pilgrimage, known as the Hajj, to the Holy City of Mecca.  Management of the solid waste generated by the pilgrims during the Hajj is a complex issue. Gannett Fleming has been contracted by King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia to develop a solid waste management action plan.  Data collection and analysis for the project began in July 2013, and the final action plan is scheduled for delivery in May 2014. The recommendations in the action plan will focus on improving health and environmental conditions during the Hajj in alignment with the Muslim religion emphasis on cleanliness.

FTZ 147 Approved for Alternative Site Framework

 FTZ logo

The Foreign Trade Zone Corporation of Southern Pennsylvania, FTZ 147, has recently been approved for the reorganization and expansion of the zone under the Alternative Site Framework (ASF).

The ASF takes the Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) area from single buildings or parcels and overlays the FTZ over a large service area that includes all of Adams, Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York Counties.

Companies within these counties that have a need for FTZ status will no longer have to wait for the traditional process of request, review and approval of a subzone. Instead, they will enjoy an almost immediate extension of the FTZ benefits for a qualified user.

The fundamental benefit offered by the FTZ program is the ability to defer, reduce or even eliminate customs duties on products admitted to the zone.

For additional information on south central Pennsylvania's Foreign Trade Zone Program, join us for a complimentary luncheon program on October 30,  visit the FTZ147 website or contact us with any questions.

The World Trade Center Harrisburg serves companies in central Pennsylvania by promoting global trade and delivering relevant educational programs, up-to-date trade information, practical trade assistance, and research & referral services for our members and clients to help them compete and prosper in a global economy.  We are a  licensed member of the World Trade Centers Association and one of more than 330 World Trade Centers located in 100 countries, connecting local companies with global opportunities.
